Weymouth, Mass. - The ITA 46th-ranked Boston College women's tennis team shouldered a tough loss to No. 31 Florida State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Weymouth Tennis Club.
The Eagles (7-12, 2-7 ACC) points came from junior Erina Kikuchi's win and the retirement of junior Katarina Gajic and senior Katharine Attwell opponents on singles courts two, three and six, respectively.
The Seminoles (10-7, 6-4 ACC) were able to fend off several comeback efforts from BC throughout the day, beginning with intense doubles play that put Boston College down a point heading into the singles play.
At doubles court three, the Eagles trialed, 1-7, but Attwell's service kick-started a rally to pull BC within two. With the Eagles pressing, the Noles returned serve between Gajic and Attwell to take the first double match, 8-5.
On No. 1 doubles, Kikuchi and freshman Veronica Corning also put together a rally. Down, 5-3, the duo broke the Seminoles' serve and FSU sent Kikuchi's hard hit serve on game-point into the ceiling to even the match. Corning executed a well placed drop-shot to put BC up in the next game and held serve to give the Eagles match point, 7-6. FSU stole the momentum back in the next set when an Eagles' shot hit the net, rolled along the edge and fell back on their own side. The Seminoles held on for the win, 9-7.
Although it seemed sophomore Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev would win at No. 2 doubles, the match was halted to transition into singles play.
Florida State took a two point lead when Ruth Seaborne downed Corning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Kikuchi got BC on the board with a straight set win over Francesca Segarelli, 6-2, 6-4, on court two.
Kelleher responded to a first-set loss, 6-0, against Katie Rybakova with a 6-3 win in the second. In the third, the Nole would bagel Kelleher again to take the point.
On court five, Khmylev went point-for-point to fours versus Federica Suess. Each side broke each others' serves to stay on par, before forcing a tie-breaker. Khmylev fell, 7-6(8-6), and was ousted, 6-3, in the second to end the match.
When the match was called, No. 133 Gajic was leading No. 62 Noemi Scharle, 5-1, in the second set. In the first, Gajic trailed, 4-1, but came back to force a tiebreaker before falling, 11-9.
Attwell's win came in when Sargeant withdrew from an even, 5-5, second set. In the first, Sargeant broke Attwell's serve at five-all and held on to win the initial set on court six.
