DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior John Leonard allowed one run in 7.2 innings of work to propel the Boston College baseball team to a 4-1 win against Michigan State Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Leonard gave up seven hits and struck out two while walking one for his second win of the season. It was a career-long outing for Leonard. Senior Garret Smith earned his first save of the season.
Junior Anthony Melchionda and freshman Tom Bourdon both had two hits and an RBI at the plate. Sophomore Matt Watson hit a two-run single to add insurance in the eighth.
BC (5-4) got ahead early once again with a run in the bottom of the first. Junior Brad Zapenas led off and reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop and classmate Marc Perdios did his job with a grounder to the right side. After a strikeout, Melchionda sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle for an RBI single.
Michigan State tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth. Ryan Jones led off and reached on an infield single and then got to third when a pickoff throw went wild. Torsten Boss got jammed on a pitch but dropped it behind Melchionda at third for an RBI single to tie the game. The Spartans put two men in scoring position later in the inning but Leonard stopped the rally with a couple of line outs to first.
The Eagles regained the lead in the fifth with another run. Junior Andrew Lawrence and Smith drew walks to start the frame and a fly out to right moved Lawrence to third. Bourdon then found the hole on the left side for an RBI single to make it 2-1.
BC added some insurance in the eighth with a pair of runs. Zapenas started things with a leadoff single and Perdios walked to put a pair on base. A wild pitch moved them both into scoring position with nobody out and then Watson drove them in with a single up the middle.
Jeff Holm went 3-for-4 for the Spartans (7-3) with a double while Jones and Boss both had a pair of hits. David Garner was hit with the loss on the mound, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits.
The Eagles will take Monday off before facing Bethune-Cookman Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
