Reno, Nev. -
Junior Brittany Wilkins hammered her ACC-leading fourth and fifth home runs to record her second multi-homer game of the season, as the Boston College softball team fell to DePaul University, 7-5, in the first game of the Wolf Pack Classic on Friday, March 4, in Reno, Nev. Wilkins went 3-for-4 to lead all players with three runs and three RBIs.
Freshman Amanda Horowitz (0-3) shouldered the loss the Eagles (3-8). The Westminster, Calif. product tossed 4.2 innings, walked three, struck out one and allowed three runs.
Lindsey Dean (2-0) collected the win for the Blue Demons (9-2), allowing three runs, striking out one in three innings of work. Kirsten Verdun went to the circle in the seventh inning and picked up her second save of the year.
After a scoreless first inning, DePaul put up four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 4-0. Brittney Yniguez singled to left and advanced to third on another hit from Marla Mathews, leaving runners on the corners. Allie Braden then plated Yniguez with a double to left, before being driven in by Samantha Morgan's single to right. Sean Plese came in to pinch run for Morgan, but was called out for leaving first too early. Two batters later, Alex Morocco brought in Lynsey Ciezki, who had doubled to left center, prompting Amanda Horowitz to relieve Jones on the mound. Horowitz walked Bree Brown to load the bases and Verdun hit a sac fly to left, scoring Ciezki, before getting out of the inning.
BC responded with two runs in the third, 4-2. Junior Alison Kooistra lead-off with a 3-2 walk, remained on first after an Eagles' strikeout, but moved up to third on a double to left center from Wilkins. A pop up to left field nearly stranded BC runners on second and third for the second straight inning, but senior Gemmy Ypparila doubled to center scoring Kooistra and Wilkins.
The Eagled tied the game, 4-4, with two runs in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first, Wilkins hit her fourth homer of the year, plating junior Ali Lynette-Krech, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
With the count full, Wilkins gave BC the lead, 5-4, with another long ball in the top half of the sixth, but the Blue Demons answered with three of their own to take the win, 7-5.
BC will play Nevada at approximately 12:45 p.m. (PST) in its second game of the Wolf Pack Classic. Fans can follow along with live stats or access a live stream via NevadaWolfPack.com.
