Boston College sophomore Albert Starshak was named the CollegeFencing360 National Fencer of the Week for March 2. At the New England Championship, Starshak earned the bronze medal in epee, to lead the Eagles to a team title and their third consecutive six-weapon trophy.
Here's what CF360 had to say about Starshak:
One of the key fencers for Boston College's impressive performance at the New England Championship (Feb. 27, at Mt. Holyoke) - as the Eagles won the six-weapon men's/women's combined title, the men's championship and top men's epee team (BC also had the #1 women's team and top men's sabre squad) ... led the BC men's epee squad with his 3rd-place finish in the individual competition, finishing behind only Sacred Heart's Justin Dion (a 2010 NCAA entrant) and Vassar's Tavish Pegram ... part of epee team's success in key bouts against Sacred Heart, helping lift BC over the defending men's team champions (BC went 78-16 in the team bouts, five ahead of the Pioneers' 73-21) ... member of BC men's team that won 26 team bouts in all three weapons ... went 8-3 in his "B" strip bouts, including clutch 5-4 win over Sacred Heart's Jeremiah German (also nearly beat Pegram, losing 1-2) ... combined with teammate Kendall Harmeyer (A-strip) to go 18-4 on the top-2 epee strips ... finished well above his B-strip status in the individual competition, after going 3-2 in both of his pools for 3rd-place (Harmeyer placed 8th) ... went +9 in his 10 individual bouts, highlighted by a 5-2 win over Pegram in the semifinal pool.
