Baseball Loses Series Finale Against Virginia Tech, 8-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - Virginia Tech took advantage of two Boston College errors by scoring five unearned runs en route to an 8-1 win Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field at the University of Rhode Island.
Ronnie Shaban led the Hokies (14-12, 1-8 ACC) at the plate by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and two runs scored. Tony Balisteri went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and scored four times.
Joe Parsons got the win on the mound after throwing 8.0 innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Senior John Leonard got the loss for BC (10-11, 4-5) after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs - two earned - on seven hits.
The Hokies got on the board with a run in the top of the first for the second day in a row. Balisteri led the game off with a single and stole second to get himself into scoring position. Shaban brought him home when he hit the gap in left for an RBI double.
Virginia Tech scored three more times in the third - all unearned with two outs - to build a 4-0 lead. Balisteri reached base with one out on an error and then Shaban hit an RBI triple to the gap in right with two down in the inning. Tim Smalling went down the left field line for an RBI double to make it a three-run lead and Matt Blow brought in another run with a single.
BC got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out run. Junior Marc Perdios singled up the middle and moved to second with a steal. Sophomore Matt Watson brought him around to score when he singled to right.
The Hokies got that run back in the fifth when Shaban struck again with an RBI double down the line in left. Virginia Tech opened the game up with two more unearned runs in the seventh to make it a 7-1 game, then Shaban tacked on another run for the Hokies in the ninth with an RBI single.
The Eagles face Northeastern Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in Brookline. Game time is 3 p.m.
