Carolyn Swords Leads Women's Basketball To Victory

Senior Carolyn Swords scored 28 points and grabbed 11 boards to lead Boston College past Virginia Tech, 76-71, at Conte Forum on Thursday night. BC improved to 16-7 overall and 3-5 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech dropped to 9-13 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
Swords went 11-for-11 from the field, a new personal best. She also shot 6-for-7 from the foul line and grabbed 11 rebounds. The 28 point, 11 rebound effort was Swords 10th double-double of the season and 40th of her career.
Senior Jaclyn Thoman had 10 points and six assists, while Stefanie Murphy notched 13 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win.
The Eagles and Hokies traded runs through much of the first half. BC led by six points on a layup by Carolyn Swords at 8:52 in the half. A jumper in the lane by Kerri Shields at 6:21 maintained a five point BC lead. Slowly, Virginia Tech cut into the lead tied the game at 31-31 at 4:09.
The Hokies took a 38-37 lead into the locker room. BC shot just 41 percent from the floor, while Virginia Tech shot 48 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the foul line. Swords led BC with 13 points in the half.
BC opened the second half with five turnovers and three positions with no results. Virginia Tech would score seven points off the Eagles miscues to take a 49-42 lead.
At 8:52, freshman Korina Chapman (six points, five boards) tied the game on a lefty hook in the lane, 53-53. The two teams would exchange hoops. A traditional three-point play by Swords gave BC a 60-57 lead with 5:40 to play.
Virginia Tech came back took the lead when Alyssa Fehn (16 points) hit a layup then stole the inbounds pass and completed a traditional three point play to give Tech a 65-64 lead. Swords gave the Eagles the lead for good when she grabbed a missed jumper by Murphy and hit a lay-up for a 68-65 lead.
After two freebies by Virginia Tech, Murphy pulled down an offensive rebound and scored to give the Eagles a three-point lead with under a minute to play. On Tech's next possession, BC freshman Kristen Doherty (eight points, four rebounds, four assists) deflected a pass and Murphy gathered the loose ball. The senior from New Hampshire hit two freebies for a 72-67 lead with 50 seconds to play.

It was also the third time this season and 10th time in her career that Swords was perfect from the floor ... She is now shooting 71.2 percent from the floor ...
