Women's Basketball Cruises Past Virginia, 73-50

Charlottesville, VA - The Boston College women's basketball team opened the game on a 20-0 run and never looked back as the Eagles earned a 73-50 victory over ACC foe Virginia at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA. BC improved to 18-9 and 5-7 in the ACC, while Virginia is now 15-13 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Senior Carolyn Swords recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Kerri Shields added 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the arc. Senior Stefanie Murphy notched 14 points while Kristen Doherty added six points, four assists and six rebounds. Freshman forward Katie Zenevitch came off the bench and scored nine points with five boards in the win.
The Eagles opened the game on a 20-2 run in the first 10 minutes of the game. In the run, Murphy and Shields had six points apiece. Virginia scored it s first backed at 10:16 on a layup by China Crosby. BC kept the lead by shooting 53.3 percent in the half and 5-for-9 from the three-point arc. Virginia shot just 19.4 percent in the half and was out-rebounded 25-18 in the half.
Boston College opened the half shooting 3-for-4 from the floor and led 47-23 at 15:15. Shield's hit her fourth three in the game which gave BC a 50-23 lead at 11:32 in the game. A Murphy layup at 8:26 gave BC a 57-27 lead.
The Eagles were shooting 49 percent in the half and were able to rest Swords, Murphy and Thoman the rest of the way.
GAME NOTES
• Kerri Shields hit five three's in the game. She has hit a three in nine straight games for the second time this season. The sophomore has also hit four or more three's in 10 games this season.
• Carolyn Swords picked up her 12th double-double of the season and 42nd in her career. Swords had two double-doubles this week in ACC action.
• Four of the Eagles five starters have started every game this season - Carolyn Swords, Stefanie Murphy, Jaclyn Thoman and Kerri Shields.
• The 19 points by Virginia in the half was the third lowest scored against BC in a half this season. BC held Hartford to just 18 points on Nov. 15 and Vermont to just 14 points on Nov. 20
