Women's Basketball Falls Short at NC State

(Raleigh, North Carolina) Thursday, February 24, 2011 - The Boston College women's basketball team fell on the road to NC State, 80-69, at Reynolds Coliseum Thursday night. The Eagles are now 18-10 and 5-8 in the ACC, while NC State is now 13-15, and 4-9 in the conference.
Boston College was led by Carolyn Swords with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Jaclyn Thoman had 18 points and five rebounds. Stefanie Murphy added 17 points and eight boards.
NC State's Bonae Holston had 28 points, 16 in the second half. Amber White added 16 points.
Swords opened up the second half with eight straight points but it wasn't enough as the Eagles turned the ball over three times and NC State responded with 12 points and a 54-42 lead. A three-pointer by Breezy Williams at 12:38 extended the Wolfpack lead to 61-47. BC cut the lead to nine points on a three-pointer by Thoman at 10:14.
From there it became the Swords - Holston game. Swords scored six straight points for BC sandwiched between tow fall-away jumpers by Holston and BC was down 69-58 with 7:16 to play.
With 6:21 to play, freshman Tiffany Ruffin hit a three-point and BC was down by eight. Thoman cut the lead to four points, 70-66, with 3:33 to play. Four foul shots by NC State extended the lead, 74-66, with 2:39 in the game.
Boston College shot just 43 percent from the floor, 22 percent from the foul line and took only 11 foul shots. The Eagles did win the battle of the boards, 39-36. NC State shot 50 percent from the floor and hit 20 of 28 free throws in the game.
The first half was full of runs as the Eagles opened up 6-2 in the first five minutes. NC State cut the Eagles lead to three points at 11:37 on a 10-8 run. With 5:05 left in the half, a layup by Thoman gave BC a 30-26 lead. Thoman would hit another drive with 3:44 to play and BC held a 33-29 lead. After an NC State time out, the Wolfpack outscored the Eagles, 10-3 to end the half and take a 42-36 lead into the locker room.
BC was led by Thoman with 11 and Swords with 10 points. Holston had 12 for NC State. The Eagles sent NC State to the foul line 14 times and the Wolfpack hit 12 freebies. BC shot 48 percent from the floor but had nine turnovers and hit only two three's.

The Eagles will end the regular season on Sunday, February 27 as BC will host No. 17 Maryland at 1 p.m. at Conte Forum. Please remember to arrive early and wear maroon and gold as the program will honor the senior class - Carolyn Swords, Stefanie Murphy and Jaclyn Thoman.
