MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Senior Nate Bayuk worked 5.0 innings and allowed one run on five hits to lead the Boston College baseball team to a 6-1 win against Indiana Saturday night at BB&T Coastal Field.
Bayuk earned the first win of his career in his first start. He struck out four and walked just one.
Senior Garret Smith, sophomore Matt Watson and freshman Tom Bourdon each had two hits in the game. Smith knocked a pair of doubles. Bourdon had a double, a run and an RBI while Watson also doubled and drove in a run. Junior Anthony Melchionda recorded two RBI.
BC (1-1) pitching held Indiana scoreless after the first inning. Three relievers combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and walking one. Freshman Eric Stevens tossed a pair of innings while senior Dane Clemens and redshirt freshman Matt Alvarez both threw one.
Indiana took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Consecutive singles by Jerrud Sabourin and Alex Dickerson put runners on the corners with one out. Bayuk fanned Dillon Dooney for the second out but a wild pitch brought Sabourin in for the game's first run.
BC responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a lead it would never lose. Smith led off and reached when a grounder to short took a bad hop, then junior Marc Perdios singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Bourdon found a hole on the right side for an RBI single to tie the game then reached second when he landed there safely after a pick off. Junior Brad Zapenas hit an RBI infield single to give BC the lead and Watson brought in the third run with a fielder's choice.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the fourth to build a 4-1 advantage. Zapenas forced a one-out walk and Watson moved him over to third with a single to right, then Melchionda drove him in with a fielder's choice.
BC pushed the lead to four with another run in the fifth. Junior Kyle Prohovich started the inning by taking a pitch on the arm and then Smith pulled the first pitch he saw for a double down the third base line to put both runners in scoring position. Perdios plated Prohovich with a sac fly to right.
Melchionda added an RBI single in the eighth for the 6-1 advantage.
Wes Wilson and Sabourin both had a pair of hits for the Hoosiers (0-2).
BC wraps up its weekend in Myrtle Beach when it takes on Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. Sunday.
