Durham, N.C. –The Boston College volleyball team was defeated by Duke, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17, on Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Freshman Courtney Castle led the Eagles (6-13, 2-6 ACC) with nine points off seven kills, an ace and a block against the Blue Devils (11-6, 5-3 ACC).
The Eagles out blocked Duke, 8-6, to hold them to a .162 hitting percentage on the night, but attack errors of their own hurt BC offensively.
Blocking and errors were the story through the much of first set, as the two sides had combined for only six kills when the score was 10-9, Duke. At that point, the Blue Devils found some offense and put together a 9-2 run. Although kills from senior Mollie Kolosky and sophomore Melissa McTighe would help the Eagles fight their way back, Duke took the first set, 25-19.
The Blue Devils took the first four points of the second game, before a kill from McTighe got BC on the board. Duke continued to press, building a seven-point lead, 13-7, but were slowed when sophomore Alex Fitzmorris and McTighe blocked a few shots. Fitzmorris and junior Krystle Higgins rattled off a few kills and the Eagles closed the gap to two, 16-14.
Duke responded by putting together another to go up by six, 23-17. After a timeout by Boston College, Castle found the word work on a kill and an ace. Paired with a block by Higgins and kills from McTighe and senior Tsvetelina Dureva, the Eagles pulled within two, 24-22, before a service ace from BC ended the second game.
Boston College regrouped during the intermission and came out swinging hard. Kills from Dureva, Higgins and freshman Kellie Barnum helped give the Eagles a 7-3 lead, but five attack errors over the next six plays enabled Duke to take a lead it did not relinquish.
BC will wrap up its visit to the Tar Heel State at Wake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 5 p.m. Live stats will be provided through GameTracker.
