Winston-Salem, N.C. - Phenomenal hitting nights from freshman Courtney Castle and sophomore Melissa McTighe helped the Boston College volleyball team sweep Wake Forest on Saturday evening in Reynolds Gym. The Eagles (7-13, 3-6 ACC) used a .317 attack percentage, their most productive of the year, to outlast the Demon Deacons (5-13, 2-7 ACC) in three close sets, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.
Castle erupted for a match and career-high 18 kills for a .441 hitting percentage, adding 12 digs and two block assists for her fourth double-double of the season. McTighe also equaled her career-mark of 10 kills, stunning the opposition with a .409 attack.
Senior Brennan Clark became the second Eagle to ever surpass 1,600 career digs with a team-high 15 scoops and added a career-best seven assists in the win.
Freshman Kellie Barnum dished out 35 assists and made eight digs for the Eagles.
The Eagles fell behind 8-4 to start the match, but Castle went on a tear over the next six plays and enabled BC comeback for an 11-8 lead. Wake Forest would pull within one on three occasions as the score advanced to 20-19, but Castle and McTighe helped close out set one, 25-22.
Boston College continued the momentum by taking the first four points of the second set, but Wake Forest responded with a 10-1 run that seemingly put the Demon Deacons in control. After the Deacs committed a service error, senior Tsvetelina Dureva and Barnum put away shots to aide the Eagles comeback.
A varied attack from Dureva, Castle, junior Krystle Higgins and senior Mollie Kolosky lifted BC as it tied the set at 15 and went point-for-point to 22. A kill from Castle was followed by another from Kolosky to give the Eagles set-point, 24-22, and an attack error by Wake ended the second game. Kolosky posted three of her seven kills (.312 attack) in the middle stanza.
With the match in reach for Boston College, Wake Forest put together a .417 hitting percentage in the third. The Eagles were able to stave the attack in thanks to their middle and outside hitters who countered with their most effective set, a .333 attack, to trade points to 15 all.
One of three aces by freshman Lauren Fields gave BC the lead, 16-15, Dureva added another point, before Wake Forest called timeout. Kills from Higgins, Castle, Kolosky and Mctighe continued to push the pace for Boston College, 24-22, but when a block by the Demon Deacons threatened to force extra time in the third, a stoppage was called.
Out of the break, Barnum connected with Dureva to end the match, 25-23, and give the Eagles their first win over Wake since 2007.
Boston College resumes conference play on Friday, Oct. 21, when it hosts Miami at 7 p.m.
