The Boston College football team opened its fall camp on Monday, August 9 amid 92-degree heat on Shea Field. The preparation has officially begun for the 2010 season which opens on September 4 against Weber State.
The offense, defense and quarterbacks donned the same colors as usual but looked a bit different. Today's practice was the first wearing Under Armour. The tops were maroon (defense), white (offense) or green (quarterbacks) with tubing outlining the shoulders and down the sides. Everyone had gold shorts with a maroon accent.
Senior LB Mark Herzlich, set to return to practice today after missing all of last season while battling cancer, was held from practice today with a foot injury. Herzlich's right foot was X-rayed this morning and he is listed as day-to-day.
A few new quarterbacks entered their first preseason camp in Josh Bordner, Shane Cranmore and Chase Rettig. Bordner and Rettig have some experience under their belts already as they participated in spring ball. Sophomores Dave Shinskie, the returning starter, and Mike Marscovetra took turns alternating with the first team.
The Eagles will practice four days in shorts and helmets before the first full day in pads Friday. Their first intrasquad scrimmage is slated for Saturday night.
Three Eagles Placed On Preseason Watch Lists
Senior Mark Herzlich and sophomore Luke Kuechly were named to the 2010 Bednarik Award Watch List while junior Montel Harris was placed on the Maxwell Award Watch List.
The Bednarik Award is presented to the nation's top defensive player while the Maxwell Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate football player in the country.
Herzlich makes the list after sitting out the 2009 season battling Ewing's sarcoma. The 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and All-American is cancer-free and ready to return to the gridiron for the Eagles.
Kuechly stepped up in Herzlich's absence and emerged as one of the top linebackers in the country as a true freshman. He was tabbed the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned All-America status after ranking second in the country in total tackles (158) and solo stops (87). He had the most tackles by a BC defender since 1993.
Harris makes the Maxwell watch list after a breakout 2009 season. He rushed for 1,457 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 112 yards a game. He netted the 10th-most rushing yards in the country and was one of four players to carry the ball over 300 times. He was an All-ACC second teamer for his performance.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced on November 8 and three finalists for each award will be announced November 22. The winners of the 2010 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 9.
