AMHERST, Mass. -
It was a successful second day of the UMass Invitational for Boston College as the Eagles defeated the No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers, 1-0. BC finished 2-0 for the weekend.
Once again Emily Kozniuk came up big for the Eagles with a second-half goal to win another close match.
The first half was a tight defensive game, with BC allowing only one shot. Janna Anctil managed four for BC, but the Hoosiers defense proved to be a tough foe for the offense. BC only got six shots off in the first half.
It looked like BC was going to be able to convert in the 17th minute off a penalty corner by Anctil, but even though Carla Tamer put the ball in net, the goal was called back.
Coming into the second half, the Eagles changed the momentum of the game with an aggressive offense. BC had six shots in the first ten minutes alone, with the entire offensive line getting involved. With so many players firing it was only a matter of time before BC scored. Kozniuk was able to put one in goal for the second game in a row, giving BC the 1-0 go ahead in the 50th minute.
BC's defense, anchored by Jenny Raftery, Friderike Hauschildt, and Tamer, only allowed the Hoosiers five shots.
Goalie Kristine Stigas made one save. The Hoosiers' goaltender Becky Pany had nine.
Next up for the Eagles will be a match at Providence on Tuesday, August 31 under the lights at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Janna Anctil led the offense with six shots...freshman Nicole Schuster registered two shots in her second collegiate start...backs Jenny Raftery and Friderike Hauschildt played all 70 minutes and had excellent defensive games.
