Boston College men's soccer has been selected to finish sixth in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll, as determined by a vote of the league's nine head coaches and announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford on Wednesday.
The Eagles return 12 letterwinners from last year's 14-9-0 team. In 2009, BC finished tied for third in the ACC with a 5-3-0 record. The team advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament after a first-round home victory over Dartmouth and then second-round road win over No. 14 St. John's.
North Carolina was chosen as the league's preseason favorite for the second straight season. The Tar Heels earned a share of the regular-season title last fall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's College Cup for the second time in succession.
Maryland earned a second-place nod in the preseason poll, followed by (in order): 2009 national champion Virginia, College Cup participant Wake Forest, Duke, Boston College, NC State, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
Boston College will open its 2010 season against Hartford on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Field. Its ACC competition will begin on Friday, Sept. 10 at home against Maryland.
