CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - On a day when it's supposed to be all about the seniors the only two Boston College freshmen, Maria Pandolfo and Nicole D'Argento, decided to crash the party on senior day leading the softball team to a doubleheader split against Maryland on a cold Sunday afternoon at Shea Field.
Boston College finishes its regular season with a record of 16-32 (2-18 ACC), while Maryland moves to 33-21 (8-11 ACC) for the year.
Pandolfo went 2-for-3 with five RBI, and D'Argento pitched a complete-game six hitter for the win in game two.
Maryland - 5, Boston College - 1
In game one, Maryland jumped on senior starter Taylor Peyton (5-11) for two runs on two hits in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Walks hurt Peyton as she gave up three free passes in the inning.
Boston College cut the Maryland lead in half in the bottom of the third inning on a Renee Ramos RBI single that scored senior Lisa Omoto.
Maryland put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth inning scoring two more runs on four hits off Alison Gage who came in to relieve Peyton.
Gage pitched six and two thirds innings of relief giving up only two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.
Boston College - 6, Maryland - 3
In game two, it was Boston College who grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Pandolfo.
The score would stay at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Dani Weir led the inning off by reaching on a fielding error by the Maryland shortstop. After back-to-back singles by Brittany Wilkins and Irene Delagrammaticas the Eagles had the bases loaded with no outs.
After a Danielle Pandolfo strikeout it was up to the younger Pandolfo to try to give the Eagles some breathing room. Maria didn't disappoint hitting a towering shot over everything in left field for the first grand slam of her young career giving BC a 5-0 lead.
Pandolfo gave her fellow freshman, D'Argento, all the help she would need as she pitched her ninth complete game of the season giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out seven.
Game two was the last regular season game of seven senior careers. Seniors Blair Destito, Omoto, D. Pandolfo, Peyton, Ramos, Weir and Amy Tunstall were honored before game one.
The Boston College softball team will now prepare for the 2010 ACC Softball Championships which will be held in Blacksburg, Va. on the campus of Virginia Tech. The first round starts on Friday, May 14.
