BC HOSTS NO. 5 FLORIDA STATE
• The Boston College baseball team welcomes No. 5 Florida State this weekend for a three-game ACC series beginning Friday at 1:30 p.m.
• The Eagles enter the series in seventh place overall in the conference. The top two teams in each division in addition to the four teams with the next best conference winning percentage, regardless of division, advance to the ACC Championship in Greensboro.
• The two teams split four games last season, but BC took the regular season series in Tallahassee and in the process, became the first team to beat Florida State in an ACC opening weekend series.
LAST YEAR'S SERIES
• The Eagles shocked the Seminoles last season at Dick Howser Stadium by taking two of three from them.
• Florida State won the ACC opener, 4-1, before BC took the next two games by scores of 14-6 and 12-5.
• Senior OF Robbie Anston went 5-for-11 in the series with a double and two RBI. Sophomore INF Brad Zapenas also had five hits with a double.
• Senior RHP Chris Kowalski and junior RHP John Leonard both had solid performances on the mound as Kowalski tossed 4.1 shutout innings in relief. He threw 3.1 of those in game three to pick up the win.
• Leonard worked the final 4.0 innings in game two to earn the save.
• The two teams also met in the ACC Championship with the Seminoles taking a 7-2 victory in the first game of the weekend.
GOOD WITH THE GLOVE
• Boston College doesn't give up too many runs in the field as it is third in the ACC and ninth in the country in fielding percentage (.978).
• The Eagles are also tops in the conference in turning double plays - they have 57 this season. That number puts them third nationally.
• Boston College has turned 16 double plays in the last 10 games. It has turned three double plays in five games this year and converted four against Bryant on April 7.
• BC has committed two errors in the last six games.
SUDS-SATIONAL
• Senior OF Mike Sudol has turned it on with both his bat and glove as of late.
• He was 4-for-7 in the two midweek games and drove in seven runs.
• In a 12-6 win against Northeastern on Tuesday, Sudol hit a pair of three-run homers to lead BC to victory.
• The two homers doubled his home run total for the season to four and his six RBI was a career high. It was the second time in his career that he hit two homers with the other coming at Duke on April 26 of last year.
• He then went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the Eagles' 7-3 win against Harvard on Wednesday. He also made a spectacular leaping catch at the wall to rob the Crimson of a couple of runs.
• Sudol also hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth inning at Virginia Tech last Friday night.
• The Franklin, N.J. product has driven in 11 runs in his last five games.
RESILIENT EAGLES
• Boston College had quite the time closing out its sweep of NC State two weekends ago, as it gave up the lead in the late innings in both games two and three, but scored in the top of the ninth to win.
• In game two, the Eagles took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but NC State scored four times in the frame to tie it, then scored again in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead - its first lead of the game.
• The Eagles fought right back with three runs in the top of the ninth to take the win back. Freshman DH Matt Watson drew a leadoff walk and after freshman Matt McGovern came on to pinch run, sophomore INF Anthony Melchionda ripped a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Senior OF Mike Sudol went the opposite way with an 0-1 pitch for an RBI double over the left fielder's head to tie the game. Sophomore OF Andrew Lawrence was intentionally walked to load the bases, but a shallow fly to right was the inning's first out.
• The top of the order came up and senior OF Robbie Anston delivered, singling to center on a 1-2 count to drive in two runs to give BC the 10-8 win.
• The series finale was even wilder as the lead switched four times from the bottom of the seventh to the top of the ninth innings.
• BC held a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth but NC State scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, then put up three runs in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.
• The lead swtiched sides again in both the top and bottom of the eighth until BC clinched it in the ninth. Freshman INF/OF Philip Miclat drew a leadoff walk when he came on to pinch hit and then a fielder's choice gave NC State the first out of the inning. Junior C Garret Smith then pulled an 0-1 pitch to the gap in left to bring sophomore INF Brad Zapenas all the way around to score and tie the game, 10-10. After a strikeout for out number two, junior INF Matt Hamlet came up and chopped a single up the middle to give BC the lead for good, 11-10.
CLOUD NINE
• Boston College was on a nine-game winning streak entering last weekend, its best since joining the ACC and its best since 2001.
• Included in the nine-game streak were consecutive sweeps against Wake Forest and NC State, which marked the first time since joining the conference it swept on consecutive weekends.
• The Eagles' 8-1 record in their previous three ACC series (Maryland, NC State, Wake Forest) was the best since joining the league in 2006.
3 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
• With the bats coming alive up and down the order, the Eagles have earned a spot among the nation's best in triples.
• Boston College has hit 20 triples on the year which is the 13th most in the country.
• BC started out hot by hitting six in the first six games, including four against Missouri on February 28. Three of those came consecutively in the eighth inning.
• The Eagles were on a torrid pace from April 17-27. They hit 10 triples in that span of seven games. They also hit four against Wake Forest on April 18.
• Senior OFs Robbie Anston and John Spatola and freshman C/DH Matt Watson each have two three-baggers to lead the team since April 17.
MY SACRIFICE
• Junior INF Matt Hamlet makes the ultimate sacrifice for the team whenever senior OF Robbie Anston gets on base, and that is a lot.
• Entering the week, Hamlet was second in the country in sacrifice bunts with 14.
• This stat is in part thanks to Anston, who has an on-base percentage of .415 as the leadoff man.
• Junior C/INF Garret Smith also ranks high nationally, as his 11 sac bunts puts him in 13th.
• As a team, BC ranked 12th in the country in sacrifices entering the week.
A FIRST SINCE 2005
• Boston College did not strike out on April 21 against Northeastern in the Beanpot Championship game.
• It was the first time that the Eagles did not fan in a game since joining the ACC.
• The last time that BC did not strike out in a game came on February 26, 2005 in a 3-1 loss to Belmont.
ONE BASE WON'T CUT IT
• Junior INF Mickey Wiswall has been on a tear as of late when it comes to extra base hits.
• Twelve of his last 20 hits have gone for extra bases dating back to April 13.
• He has six doubles, a triple and five homers in that span which gives him a slugging percentage of .705.
WISWALL, MOIR PROVIDE LATE-INNING HEROICS
• Junior INF Mickey Wiswall and redshirt freshman Rob Moir stepped up big April 10 vs. Maryland to give the Eagles an important 5-4 ACC win in 10 innings.
• In the second game of a doubleheader, BC was losing 4-2 and down to its last out in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore INF Brad Zapenas led the frame off with a single and after two outs were recorded, Wiswall crushed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center to send the game into extra innings.
• Freshman INF/OF Philip Miclat led off in the bottom of the 10th and fought off a few pitches to draw a walk and then junior C/INF Garret Smith laid down a sac bunt, but the pitcher threw the ball into center field trying to get the lead runner.
• An intentional walk loaded the bases and then redshirt freshman OF Rob Moir singled up the middle for the walk-off win.
• It was the first RBI of Moir's career.
ROTATING ROTATION
• Boston College has tried out a variety of starting rotations on the weekends.
• Junior LHP Pat Dean is the established No. 1 starter, but he missed starts at Virginia and vs. Maryland.
• Sophomore RHP Mike Dennhardt is the only pitcher to stay in the starting rotation all 11 weekends. He has been the Saturday starter six times.
• The third spot in the rotation has seen four different pitchers so far and junior RHP John Leonard will get his fifth-straight start this Sunday.
• Junior RHP Kevin Moran stepped into a starting role after starting the season in the bullpen. He started games at Florida Atlantic, Miami and Virginia.
• Freshman RHP Andrew Del Colle earned a spot in the starting rotation for the first two weekends at Tulane and Auburn.
• Freshman RHP Hunter Gordon, who has been one of BC's best pitcher out of the bullpen, also got a start when Dean was hurt at Virginia.
RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY
• The weather in New England has wreaked havoc on the Eagles' home schedule.
• Six BC home games have either been moved or postponed due to Mother Nature and a total of eight of 19 games in New England have been rearranged.
• Boston College's March 23 game vs. Hartford was postponed and its March 24 game vs Holy Cross was moved back a day.
• BC had to play a doubleheader on Saturday for its first two ACC series due to rain.
• Both non-conference games the week of March 29 were postponed, but BC was able to make up its game at Northeastern that Wednesday after the game at Rhode Island was PPD due to flooding in the area.
• Against Wake Forest, all three games were played under sloppy conditions and two start times were moved up. It rained during all three games, but no doubleheader was played.
GREAT START AT HOME
• Boston College is 12-3 at home this season which is its best start in Chestnut Hill since 2003.
• The Eagles went 12-3 in their 15 home games that year.
HIGH HEAT
• The city of Boston came across an unprecedented day of heat on April 7 for the Eagles' game against Bryant.
• The game-time temperature was 89 degrees and it even reached 90 into the later innings in an 11-3 BC win.
• It was the hottest April 7 on record. It broke the 1991 record of 86 degrees.
LEADING OFF
• Senior OF Robbie Anston emerged as one of the top leadoff hitters in the ACC last year and he has taken it even further this season.

• Anston has reached base in 41 of the 46 games this season.
SPEEDY SUNDAY
• Boston College's series finale vs. Duke March 28 was a short affair - it lasted just 1:59.
• Junior LHP Pat Dean and Duke's Dennis O'Grady both threw complete games in a 2-1 BC win.
• Dean started the game by pitching 3.1 innings of perfect baseball. Duke got its lone run in the fourth inning when it pieced together three singles.
• Dean then went on to retire 10-straight hitters from the fifth to eighth innings.
• The Naugatuck, Conn. native only needed 92 pitches in his 9.0 innings of work and 64 of them were strikes. He scattered six hits and struck out two while not issuing a walk. Only one runner outside of the fourth inning reached scoring position.
• O'Grady was equal to the task as he allowed two runs in the fourth inning and put up zeros in every other frame. He allowed eight hits and struck out six without giving up a walk.
• Neither pitcher allowed an extra base hit.
BUT A LONG WEEKEND AT NC STATE
• The Eagles caught the other end of the spectrum in Raleigh.
• The second game of the series, a 10-8 BC win, took a season-long 4:06. Then the series finale took 3:57 as the Eagles won 11-10.
• The total time of those two games was 8:03 for 18 innings. That is exactly an hour longer than the longest game in NCAA history which BC and Texas played in last season in the Austin Regional. That game took 25 innings and 7:03.
• Those two games at NC State are the two longest games of the season for BC.
DEAN IS DOMINANT
• Junior LHP Pat Dean earned a spot on the weekend rotation on April 12 of last season and hasn't looked back since.

JOHNNY ON THE SPAT
• Senior OF John Spatola has had a big bat this season and he had a monster game against Missouri on February 28.
• The former walk-on smashed two three-run homers and added a double in a 3-for-4 effort.
• Spatola drove in a career-high seven runs, which was more runs than the Tigers had as a team in a 14-6 win.
• It was Spatola's first multi-homer game of his career.
• The Milton, Mass. product ranks seventh in the ACC in homers (12), 13th in total bases (106), 16th in steals (12) and 19th in slugging (.599).
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
• Junior C/INF Garret Smith started at shortstop in high school and was the starting shortstop last year for BC, but now he is the starting catcher.
• Smith had never caught a game in his life entering the season.
• His defense is needed to replace the loss of All-American Tony Sanchez and his experienced bat is needed as well.
• He is a career .266 hitter and has started 118 games since he arrived on campus in 2008.

• Watson drove in all three runs with a pair of doubles in Boston College's 3-0 win at Miami March 12.
• He drove in three runs in the top of the ninth inning March 20 at No. 1 Virginia in a valiant comeback attempt by BC. Down 4-0 and with the bases loaded with one out, Watston hit a bases-clearing double to pull the Eagles within a run, but he was stranded in scoring position.
• Watson also got the game-winning hit in BC's 7-4 win against Holy Cross. He hit an RBI single in the Eagles' six-run fifth inning to put BC on top 5-4.
