Baseball Takes Down Bryant, 11-3

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team won its fourth straight non-conference game on Wednesday when it defeated Bryant, 11-3, under record-breaking heat at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commader Shea Field.
The Eagles (13-15) scored in seven of the eight innings in which they stepped to the plate. Senior Mike Sudol led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs and two RBI. It was his first homer of the season. Sophomore Andrew Lawrence also launched his first long ball this year and went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Seniors Robbie Anston and John Spatola and junior Matt Hamlet each had two hits. Anston had two doubles, an RBI and two runs and Spatola and Hamlet also doubled. Freshman Matt Watson drove in a game-high three runs.
Junior John Leonard made his first appearance of the year and earned the win, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing one hit while fanning three. Seven pitchers came out of the bullpen with senior Chris Kowalski and freshman Jay Jeannotte both throwing perfect innings.
The game-time temperature was 89 degrees and even reached 90 into the later innings. Today's heat broke the 1991 record of 86 degrees.
Boston College struck first in the bottom of the first. Anston led off with a double to the gap in left and then took third on wild pitch with one out. Junior Mickey Wiswall battled at the plate and ended up with an RBI single to center for the game's first run.
Sudol added to the lead in the second with a solo home run to right on a 1-0 pitch.
The Eagles put up two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Hamlet singled to start the frame and then Spatola lined a ball inside the first base line for a double to put both players in scoring position with one out. Watson drove in a run with a groundout to first and then Sudol singled to plate Spatola.
Bryant got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth. Colin Dougherty led off with a four-pitch walk and then Jeff Vigurs took a 2-1 pitch to the opposite field for a homer, cutting the deficit in half.
BC responded with four more runs in the fourth to build its lead to 8-2. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda led off with a single and he was sacrificed to second by Lawrence. Sophomore Brad Zapenas singled to put runners on the corners and then Anston dropped a double inside the line in left for a run. Wiswall was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs and then Spatola drew a walk to force in a run. Watson sent a pitch back up the middle for a two-RBI single to push the lead to six runs.
Lawrence put another run up in the fifth with a solo home run to right on a 1-1 count.
The Eagles manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-2. Hamlet began the inning when he went the other way on a slider for a double down the line in right and then Wiswall moved him over with a groundout to the right side. Spatola then drove him in with another groundout to the second baseman.
BC added its 11th run in the seventh when Sudol and Lawrence hit consecutive doubles.
Bryant added a run in the ninth on an RBI single from Dougherty.
Jeff Vigurs went 2-for-4 for Bryant (10-14) with the two-run homer. Zakary Cianciolo went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
BC is back in action Friday when it hosts Maryland at 2:30 p.m. in the first of a three-game ACC series.
