CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Dane Clemens brought a shutout into the ninth inning as the Boston College baseball team beat Quinnipiac, 6-1, Tuesday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Clemens established new career highs with 8.2 innings pitched and seven strikeouts. He tossed 114 pitches and 76 of them were strikes. The Pelham, N.Y. product brought the shutout into the ninth, but lost it with a bases loaded walk.
Clemens faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings with each of those frames ending in double plays. He also retired 14-straight batters from the fourth to eighth innings.
Sophomore Matt Brazis picked up his sixth save of the season, striking out the final batter with the bases loaded.
Junior Matt Hamlet went 2-for-4 with a double and a run while freshman Matt Watson was 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run. Sophomore Andrew Lawrence hit his second home run of the season - a solo shot - and junior Garret Smith recorded an RBI triple.
Boston College (24-17) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to get ahead early. Hamlet singled with one out and stole second with two, then senior John Spatola hit an RBI single to right for the game's first run. After Spatola stole second to get into scoring position, Watson followed suit with an RBI single of his own.
The Eagles added three runs to the lead in the fourth to make it 5-0. Spatola drew a four-pitch leadoff walk and then Watson roped a single up the middle. Senior Mike Sudol got on base when the shortstop made an error which allowed Spatola to score and put runners on the corners. Sophomore Brad Zapenas laid down a bunt that brought Watson in it to make it 4-0 and then Smith drove in another run with a triple down the line in right.
Lawrence added his solo home run in the eight to push the lead to 6-0.
Quinnipiac scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth. Ryan Ullrich and Thomas Donovan hit consecutive singles to start the inning and then a pair of walks with two outs forced the run home.
Ullrich and Ben Farina both had a pair of hits for the Bobcats (10-26).
