CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team received an offensive lift on Tuesday afternoon from an athlete who is known more for her play one the ice than her play on the field. Ice Hockey star, and now softball sparkplug, Allie Thunstrom helped ignite the Boston College offense to a sweep over Boston University by the scores 5-0 and 2-1.
The wins improve Boston College to 14-25, while the losses drop Boston University to 23-17.
Thunstrom went 5-for-7 on the day with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.
Boston College - 5, Boston University - 0
In game one, Thunstrom started the Eagles off in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out single to third base. Senior Amy Tunstall followed Thunstrom with a two-run home run to right field to give BC a quick 2-0 lead.
Boston College extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with a leadoff single by Thunstrom. Thunstrom scored later in the inning on a bases loaded walk by Brittany Wilkins to make the score 3-0.
That was all BC starter Nicole D'Argento (4-9) needed as she pitched a brilliant game. She recorded her second complete-game shutout of her career, and she also tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in the win.
Boston College - 2, Boston University - 1 (Eight Innings)
In game two, the Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Rene Delagrammaticas started the inning with a one-out walk. With Delagrammaticas now on second base with two outs it was Thunstrom who once again gave the BC offense a lift. She singled to left field to score Delagrammaticas, and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Boston University tied the game in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run off of Allison Gage (5-7).
After both teams failed to score a run in the seventh inning the game went into extra innings. Non-conference rules state that once a game goes into extra innings a team automatically gets a runner on second base with no outs to start their half of the inning.
Boston University had their chance to score first but its runner on second base got thrown out trying to advance to third on a ground ball hit to Gage. The Terriers couldn't mount any offense after that so the game went into the bottom of the eighth still tied.
The Eagles now had their turn with a runner on second base to start the inning, and they would take full advantage of that opportunity. Maria Pandolfo sacrificed Carolyn Jones to third base to make the first out in the inning. Delagrammaticas was up next and she hit a ground ball to shortstop. Jones broke for home and scored safely as the BU shortstop committed a throwing error to end the game.
Boston College will now go back into conference play as it will host Virginia in a crucial three-game series this weekend. The first game of the series is on Saturday, April 24 at 12 p.m.
