MIAMI, Fla. - The Boston College baseball team scored all of its runs with two outs in an 11-5 win against FIU Tuesday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Eagles pounded out 18 hits with everyone in the starting lineup recording a hit. The first seven players in the batting order each had a multiple hit game.
Juniors Matt Hamlet and Mickey Wiswall both had three hits, four RBI and two runs in the game. Hamlet hit his fourth double of the year while Wiswall recorded his third long ball. Senior Robbie Anston scored three times and had a double, his 10th extra base hit in 10 games. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda also hit a two-bagger.
Senior Dane Clemens was solid on the mound in the win. He pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on just three hits. He struck out four and walked three.
The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the second with two runs. Mike Martinez was hit by a fastball and Tim Jobe walked to put the first two batters aboard and then Yoandy Barroso singled past a diving Wiswall at third to score the game's first run. Jobe scored on a groundout later in the inning.
BC responded immediately with two runs of its own in the top of the third. Freshman Matt Watson led off with a single up the middle and senior Mike Sudol moved him up with a sacrifice bunt. Anston then one-hopped the wall in left-center for an RBI double and Hamlet sneaked a single past the diving second baseman to plate Anston and tie the game.
The Eagles took a 7-2 lead with five runs in the fifth - all coming with two outs. With one out in the inning, Sudol singled and freshman Matt McGovern bunted himself on to put runners on first and second. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs and Hamlet continued his run producing with a single to left field to give BC the 3-2 lead.
Wiswall added to the advantage when he powered a 2-1 pitch to the opposite field for his third homer of the season, giving the Eagles a 6-2 cushion.
The rally continued when Melchionda walked and senior John Spatola singled to put two more on base. Sophomore Brad Zapenas then dropped an RBI single past the diving second baseman in shallow center.
BC extended the lead to 10-2 in the sixth inning with three more runs. The first two batters were retired quickly, but Anston started another two-out rally when he sent a single back up the middle. He stole second to get into scoring position and Hamlet brought him home when he doubled down the line in right. Wiswall cashed in another run with a frozen rope single to right and Melchionda got in on the action, hitting the wall in right-center for an RBI double.
The Panthers cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, capped by a Rudy Flores two-run double to the gap in right to make it 10-5.
BC added another run in the ninth when Hamlet forced a run home on a bases loaded walk.
Flores led FIU at the plate with that two-run double while Yoandy Barroso and Sean Reilly added the other RBI.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at 6 p.m.
