Boston College student-athletes Steve Aponavicius (football), Kelly Henderson (soccer) and Tim Ritchie (track and field) have been selected for the ACC's Weaver-James-Corrigan Scholarships, the league has announced. The scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes--three from each league institution--who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to contribute to their graduate education. Each recipient has performed with distinction in both the classroom and his/her respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Aponavicius was a walk-on to the BC football team as a sophomore, having not participated in football in high school. He eventually earned an athletic scholarship, was selected to the ACC All-Academic football team on four occasions, and finished his career as the Eagles' all-time leading scorer. The finance and marketing major from Easton, Pa. completed his undergraduate work in 2009 and utilized his remaining year of eligibility to begin working toward his MBA. Aponavicius was active with both the Uplifting Athletes and BC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Henderson racked up 31 points on nine goals and 13 assists during her BC career. The Baldwin, N.Y., native is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and volunteers in her spare time as a mentor to underprivileged children at local hospitals and schools. Majoring in Elementary Education and Human Development, Henderson earned Dean's List honors in Boston College's Lynch School of Education and the Athletic Directors' Award for Academic Achievement. During her undergraduate studies, Henderson served as a teacher's aide in the North Shore School District, and plans to take graduate classes at Columbia's Teachers College.
Ritchie graduated from Boston College last May with degrees in both biology and theology. A three-sport student-athlete competing in cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field, Ritchie placed 12th at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championship, sixth in the 5,000-meter run at the ACC Track & Field Championship, and posted a pair of top-10 finishes at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in 2009. The Worcester, Mass., native is on the leadership council of the St. Thomas More Catholic Men's Group and is a tutor/instructional assistant the Boston College's Learning Resource Center for Student-Athletes. Ritchie plans to pursue a Master's degree in either Theology or Pastoral Ministry at Boston College.
The student-athletes will be honored at a luncheon April 14 in Greensboro, N.C.
