The Boston College Women’s Rowing will kick off its spring racing season this Saturday, March 20 at the eleventh annual Jesuit Invitational on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The regatta is hosted by St. Joseph's University and features only Jesuit universities competing for the Cannonball Trophy. In addition to St. Joseph’s, teams competing include Loyola University Maryland, Fairfield University and Georgetown University.
The Eagles recently returned to Boston from a week-long training trip in Elberton, Ga. during Boston College’s spring break. They look to translate that formative training week and the speed training they have done all winter into this weekend’s competition.
“What we have right now, which is really great, is we have boats pushing one another and athletes pushing one another,” head coach Steve Fiske said.
“That can serve to really move the program and move the boats farther than they would have gone if they didn’t have that competition… so it’s a good, healthy competitive situation.”
Fiske and the Eagles will take that competitive focus into the Invite.
“We’re definitely working on racing effectively at high rates and so we have a league goal and we have a time goal that we’re looking for in flat conditions,” said Fiske.
Noting the recent bad weather in New Jersey, Fiske added, “With all the rain recently, I think the race this weekend is actually into a current and the times might be difficult to achieve.”
“So it’s more of [a goal to] race effectively, race the rate, have a race where you get off the water and say, ‘we rowed pretty well, our best row to date’.”
The Jesuit Invitational will take place on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. with the Eagles’ first race at 1:06 p.m.
