STORRS, Conn. - Nick Ahmed went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as Connecticut defeated the Boston College baseball team, 8-4, Tuesday in non-conference action at J.O. Christian Field.
Ahmed added a homer and two runs for the Huskies (8-4) at the plate. LJ Mazzilli was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Joe Pavone and Billy Ferriter both had two hits and an RBI and both of Ferriter's knocks were doubles.
Michael Zaccardo picked up the win on the mound after throwing 3.1 innings of relief and allowing one run on three hits.
Sophomore Brad Zapenas drove in two runs for BC (6-9) and senior John Spatola belted his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot. Freshman Matt Watson went 2-for-5 with a double and junior Mickey Wiswall drove in the other run.
The BC bullpen performed well, not surrendering a run in five innings of work. Senior Geoff Oxley threw 3.0 of those innings and allowed two hits while freshmen Hunter Gordon and Jay Jeannotte both tossed a scoreless inning.
The Eagles jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first. Junior Matt Hamlet was hit by a pitch and then he got into scoring position on a wild pitch to the back stop. Wiswall then sent a 2-2 pitch up the middle for an RBI single. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda took a pitch that glanced off his helmet and senior John Spatola walked to load the bases with one out. A strikeout brought Zapenas to the plate with two down and he delivered two more runs with a single on a 1-1 hanging breaking ball.
UConn responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Pierre LePage took the first pitch for a double to the gap in right and then Ahmed pulled a 1-1 offering over the wall in left to cut the deficit to a run. George Springer walked and got to third on a stolen base and a fly out and with two outs, Mazzilli singled in the tying run. He then got into scoring position by stealing second and Pavone followed suit with an RBI single through the left side.
The Huskies added to the lead in the third inning when Pavone and Ferriter hit consecutive doubles with two outs to make it 5-3.
UConn added three more runs in the fourth to extend the cushion to 8-3. Ahmed and Mike Nemeth both recorded RBI singles in the inning and a fielder's choice brought the final run in.
Spatola sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left-center to cut the deficit to five runs in the top of the fifth but BC couldn't get anything going the rest of the way, going down in order in three of the final four innings.
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Bryant for a 3:30 p.m. game.
