Boston College was declared the winner of the Hatter Classic finishing with a 3-1 record. Bethune-Cookman and Stetson both finished 2-2, and Albany went 1-3 for the tournament.
Freshman Nicole D'Argento continues to be the story for BC as she continued her strong start to her BC career by dominating on both sides of the ball on Sunday. So far this season she is hitting .375, and has an ERA of 1.40.
Boston College - 6, Bethune-Cookman - 2
In game one, senior Amy Tunstall continued her hot start to the season as well as she led off the top of the second inning with a solo homerun to left-field to give the Eagles a quick 1-0 lead. She is now batting .400 (8-for-20) on the year.
Bethune-Cookman came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with an unearned run on a single to left.
The Eagles broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning scoring four times in the frame. BC took advantage of some sloppy fielding to score one of its first run of the inning. The other runs came off a two-RBI single to left by Alison Kooistra, and a RBI single to shortstop by Brittany Wilkins to make the score 5-1 BC after six and a half.
That would be more than enough for D'Argento (2-1) as she once again pitched a solid game for the Eagles going six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out seven in the win. She also chipped in offensively going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Taylor Peyton came in for the seventh to wrap up the win for the Eagles.
Stetson - 5, Boston College - 3
In game two, Stetson took a 1-0 lead over BC, and junior Allison Gage, in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to center field by Katie Lawrence.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the first as Wilkins led off the inning with her first homerun of the season that was a bomb over the center-field fence. A few batters later Boston College would take their first lead of the game as D'Argento hit an RBI single up the middle to score Rene Delagrammaticas to make the score 2-1.
Stetson refused to go away as they tied the game back up at 2-2 in the top of the second inning off a Gage error.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the third inning when D'Argento was at it again hitting her first collegiate homerun with two outs in the inning down the left-field line to give BC the lead back at 3-2.
Gage got back into trouble in the top of the fifth inning as Stetson put together back-to-back singles with one out in the inning. Coach Jen Finley decided to bring in Peyton (2-2) to try to get out of the jam and she did get out of it without giving up a run.
Stetson was down to their final out in the top of the seventh inning, but Peyton couldn't shut the door as the Hatters hit a three-run homerun to make the score 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Eagles couldn't mount a comeback as they went in order in the bottom of the seventh inning losing 5-3.
Boston College will have a couple days off before they take on Bethune-Cookman in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 2 in Dayton, Fl. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
