NEW ORLEANS - Jeremy Schaffer sparked a seven run first inning with a grand slam and Tulane never looked back as it beat the Boston College baseball team, 14-6, Sunday at Turchin Stadium.
Schaffer went 2-for-5 with five RBI in the game. Blake Crohan went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored and Brennan Middleton went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Seven Green Wave players had multiple hits as Tulane recorded 19 as a team.
Robby Broach picked up the win on the mound after throwing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Sophomore Anthony Melchionda went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the Eagles and freshman Matt Watson went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Senior John Spatola hit his second home run of the series.
Tulane's bats came alive in the bottom of the first as the first three players got on to load the bases. Schaffer then took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for a grand slam.
Garrett Cannizaro singled after BC got the first out of the inning and then Alex Byo snuck a single through the middle to put runners on the corners. Jamie Bruno cleared the bases with a one-hopper off the wall to make it 6-0. Middleton then singled in the seventh run.
The Eagles scored single runs in the second and third innings. In the top of the second, Spatola hit a solo homer to right field. In the third inning, Watson got on with a double and then sophomore Matt Hamlet brought him home with a two-out double past the diving third baseman.
The Green Wave got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead. Middleton singled to leadoff and was sacrificed to second. Crohan cashed the run in with a single to left field and then Rob Segedin tripled to right for Tulane's ninth run.
BC responded with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Watson was hit by a pitch with one out and then sophomore Brad Zapenas singled on the next pitch to put two men on. Senior Robbie Anston singled to left-center to drive in Watson and then the left fielder misplayed the ball which allowed both Zapenas and Anston to get into scoring position. Hamlet walked to load the bases and after a strikeout, Melchionda brought home another run with an infield single.
Tulane scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning by hitting five-straight singles. All of the runs came after the first two batters were retired. The Green Wave capped its scoring in the sixth when Bruno hit a two-run single.
Junior Mickey Wiswall and Melchionda drove in runs in the top of the ninth for BC with RBI singles.
Boston College heads back home before traveling to Auburn next weekend. The Eagles will face the Tigers, Florida Atlantic and Missouri while in Alabama.
