Baseball Shuts Out Tulane, 12-0

NEW ORLEANS - Sophomore Mike Dennhardt tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball to lead Boston College to a 12-0 blanking of Tulane Saturday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Dennhardt allowed seven base runners and none of them advanced past second base. BC's starting pitching has thrown 14.0 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits in the series.
Senior captain Robbie Anston was a home run shy of the cycle as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs. He reached base on all five of his at-bats. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda and freshman Matt Watson both went 2-for-5. Melchionda added his fifth RBI of the series and Watson belted a three-run homer.
Junior Mickey Wiswall added a three-run round tripper of his own in the top of the eighth inning.
For the second time this series, BC got ahead early with a run in the top of the first. Anston led off with a single to left and he moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Matt Hamlet. Wiswall was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and Melchionda continued his hot hitting with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the second to put BC up 3-0. Junior Garret Smith and Watson both singled to put runners on first and second and then Anston one-hopped the wall in left-center with two outs for a triple and two RBI.
The Green Wave put two men on in the bottom of the fourth but came up empty. Blake Crohan forced a walk to start the frame and then Cody Robinson also drew a walk with two outs. Dennhardt got out of it when he fielded a hard comebacker to record the third out.
The Eagles added another run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0. Anston beat out a grounder over the second base bag and then Hamlet singled to center to put runners on the corners. Wiswall grounded into a 4-3 double play but Anston scored in the process.
In the bottom of the frame, Dennhardt issued consecutive walks with two outs but Crohan swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded out to sophomore Brad Zapenas at short to end the threat.
BC posted four more runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Senior captain John Spatola started the inning and reached on a throwing error by the second baseman and then Smith drew a walk to put two men on. Watson then crushed the first pitch he saw off the top of the video board in left field for a three-run homer.
Zapenas came up to bat next and beat out a soft chopper down the third base line and then Anston reached when the shortstop dropped a pop up in short left field. A balk moved both runners into scoring position and then Hamlet used a sacrifice fly to put the eighth run on the board.
The Eagles put up four more runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by Wiswall's three-run shot.
The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday.
