Placekicker Steve Aponavicius, offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo, and offensive guards Nathan Richman and Emmett Cleary were named to the 2009 ACC All-Academic Football Team, the league announced today.
Aponavicius earned a berth on the team for the fourth year in a row, becoming only the 11th player in ACC history to be selected to the ACC All-Academic Football team four times. He joins Ralph Lary of Maryland (1977-80), Travis Pearson of Duke (1990-93), Eddie Goines of NC State (1991-94), Daryl Bush of Florida State (1994-97), DaLawn Parrish of Wake Forest (1995, 97-99), Chris Hope of Florida State (1998-2001), Dan Dyke of Georgia Tech (1999-2002), Doug Justice of North Carolina (2002-05), Adam Podlesh of Maryland and Georgia Tech's Travis Bell (2004-07) as the only four-time members of the team.
To be eligible for consideration, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career and played a significant role in at least 50% of the team's games during the 2009 season. All 12 ACC schools were represented by at least one selection on the team. The ACC has selected an ACC All-Academic Football team every year since 1954.
