Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
The Boston College volleyball team fell to Virginia, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15, on Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va. Freshman setter Cagla Sen posted team-highs with 16 assists and a .800 hitting percentage (going 4-for-5), adding nine digs and two blocks on the evening.
Sophomore middle hitter Krystle Higgins tallied a match-high five blocks, while junior outside hitter Tsvetelina Dureva led Boston College (8-20, 0-15 ACC) with eight kills and classmate Brennan Clark had a team-best 12 digs at libero. Virgina (13-12, 7-8 ACC) relied on 13 kills from McKenzie Adams and 10 kills from Simone Asque to defeat the Eagles in straight sets.
In the first game, Higgins had a kill and combined with Hanley on a block to put BC on the board, but the Cavs opened on a 9-2 run before the Eagles took a timeout. Virginia scored three straight out of the break and added three more after a kill from senior Rainey Hanley to make the score 15-3, forcing another timeout from BC.
Virginia scored six straight after the second stoppage. With the Cavs in control of the set, a service error gave the Eagles a point and another kill by Virginia pushed the score to 22-4, but a well-timed block from senior Melanie Cimino swung the momentum in favor of Boston College.
The Eagles claimed the next six points off a pair of kills from Cimino, one by Dureva and three Virginia errors. After a point for the Cavs, BC continued to work to get back into the game. Freshman Melissa McTighe put a shot away and the Eagles forced the Cavaliers into four more errors, bringing the score to 23-16. McTighe added one more kill, but Virginia was able to hold on for a win in game one, 25-17.
BC fell behind, 6-1, to start the second set. A kill from Sen had put the Eagles on the board, but it was kills from sophomore Val Mattaliano and Higgins, paired with a Virginia error that brought the score to 7-4.
After the Cavaliers stretched their lead to six, Sen stuffed Jessica O'Shoney. Freshman Alexandra Trobbe aced Virginia on the next serve and Adams committed an attack error to make the score, 10-8. Kills from Dureva and McTighe would help the Eagles stay in the game, but the Cavaliers took game two, 25-19.
Boston College took the first point of the third set on a block by Higgins and Sen. The BC lead grew to three when the freshman setter followed with an ace and Virginia committed an error. The Cavs responded with three points of their own, but kills by Higgins and sophomore Manon Palandjian gave the Eagles a 5-3 advantage.
Virginia rattled off another four consecutive points, but BC kept pace on kills from Palandjian and McTighe. The two sides traded points until 13-all, but two errors by the Eagles gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. A service error and a kill from Baader would complete the point total for Boston College, as Virginia pulled away for the win, 25-15.
The Eagles return home next weekend, Nov. 12-14, for matches against Duke and Wake Forest. BC faces off against the Blue Devils on Friday at 7 p.m. Sunday's match against the Demon Deacons is scheduled to begin at noon. Admission is free to Power Gym in Conte Forum.
