Boston College senior offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo, junior running back Montel Harris and sophomore linebacker Luke Kuechly have been named to the 2010 All-ACC first team, the league announced today. Senior offensive guard Thomas Claiborne received honorable mention accolades. Voting is conducted by the Atlantic Coast Conference Sports Media Association.
Harris, whose 100-yard rushing performances elevated the Eagles from a five-game midseason losing streak to a five-game winning run to end the regular season, was the only player named to the first team on all 61 ballots. Harris topped the 100-yard mark in his final six games of the regular season and in eight of 11 appearances overall. He suffered a knee injury in a win over Virginia on Nov. 20 that secured postseason eligibility for the Eagles, who became the first team in ACC history to lose five straight and win five in a row in the same season. Of the 81 ACC teams to suffer through five consecutive losses in a year, the 2010 BC squad is the only one to win more than three in a row at any point of the same campaign.
Castonzo, who tied a Boston College school record with his 53rd consecutive start Saturday at Syracuse, has started every game since his true freshman campaign. The biochemistry major, who hopes to conduct cancer research someday, will be honored as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete at the NFF's awards dinner next week in New York City.
Kuechly, who earlier today was named to the American Football Coaches Association's All-America team, leads the nation in tackles (171, 14.25 per game) and solo tackles (102, 8.50 per game) and is a part of a Boston College defense that is best in the nation against the run (80.17 ypg.). He has registered 10 or more tackles in 21 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation.
In addition to Castonzo and Harris, the All-ACC first-team offense includes WR Leonard Hankerson (Miami); WR Torrey Smith (Maryland); OT Chris Hairston (Clemson); OG Rodney Hudson (Florida State); OG Brandon Washington (Miami); C Sean Bedford (Georgia Tech); TE George Bryan (NC State); RB Anthony Allen (Georgia Tech); QB Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech); PK Chris Hazley (Virginia Tech), and SP Tony Logan (Maryland). In addition to Kuechly, the first-team defense includes DE Da'Quan Bowers (Clemson), DE Brandon Jenkins (Florida State), DT Quinton Coples (North Carolina), DT Jarvis Jenkins (Clemson), LB Nate Irving (NC State), LB Alex Wujciak (Maryland), CB Jayron Hosley (Virginia Tech), CB Chase Minnifield (Virginia), S DeAndre McDaniel (Clemson), S Kenny Tate (Maryland), and P Matt Bosher (Miami).
