Madison, Conn. -
The Boston College cross country teams competed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Hammonassett State Park in Madison, Conn. Seniors Caroline King and Hope Krause as well as junior Jillian King earned All-Northeast Region honors, as the No. 22 women's team scored all five athletes in the first 30 runners to take fourth place on 92 points. Additionally, every member of the men's team recorded a personal record (PR) in the 10K, but it was sophomore Louis Serafini who led the way to a 19th place team finish.
Both fields consisted of 35 teams and featured at least three nationally ranked Division-I programs. In addition to BC, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 14 Providence and No. 15 Stony Brook ran in the 6K (3.75 miles) women's race, while the men's 10K (6.2 miles) pitted No. 4 Iona, No. 14 Syracuse and No. 28 Providence against each other.
Only 14 points separated the first four teams in the women's competition. Syracuse took the team title with 78 points, while Stony Brook (83), Providence (87), Boston College (92) and Columbia (206) rounded out the top-five teams. The fourth place finish marks the ninth top-five team placing for the Eagles in 10 years.
The Syracuse men's team was also able to claim the northeast regional crown, out dueling Iona by seven points, 56-63, to defend its title. Providence (113), Dartmouth (138) and Columbia (146) capped off the first five teams. The BC men totaled 487 points for 19th place, improving by eight team spots and 224 points over last year's standings.
The first 25 student-athletes in each race garnered All-Northeast Region recognition.
The Boston College women were led by senior Caroline King. The 2010 All-ACC member crossed the line in a PR of 20:17.6 for seventh place, her fourth top-10 finish this season.
Joining her on the All-Region Team were junior Jillian King, who also PR-ed with a time of 20:26.9 for 12th place, and senior walk-on Hope Krause, who pushed herself to a PR of 20:35.4 for 16th place.
Filling out the score card for the women were sophomores Elizabeth O'Brien and Elizabeth Hynes. O'Brien shattered her previous PR by 56 seconds to finish in 21:01.7 at 27th and Hynes bested her PR by 24 seconds with a time of 21:08.1 for 30th overall.
Fellow sophomore Allison Stasiuk also lowered her PR with a time of 21:38.4 for the 63rd spot in the race and senior Madeline Wallace turned a 21:44.0 - not far off from her PR - but neither were point scorers for BC.
The men's team also ran extremely well together, all completing the 10 kilometer course within one minute of each other. Runners one through seven for the Eagles either lowered their PR by at least two-and-a-half minutes or had never competed at said distance.
The onslaught of PRs for the men's team was ignited by Serafini, who posted a 31:52.6 for 78th place in his first attempt at the 10K. Classmate Danny Kane scored second for BC, taking 91st with a time of 32:00.1 (PR).
Close behind were Theodore Doyle, coming in at 32:11.7 (PR) for 103rd, senior Michael Keebler, crossing in 32:15.4 (PR) for 105th and sophomore Jordan Hamm, who establish his 10K mark at 32:20.7 as the 107th finisher.
Graduate student Brian Hughes crushed his PR with a 32:30.5 and senior Ian Thomas recorded a 32:53.0 in his 10K debut, but neither counted towards the team score for Boston College.
The women's team awaits the announcement of the 2010 NCAA Championship field. The top two teams in each of the XX regions receive automatic bids, while other teams are eligible for at-large selections. The top four individuals from non-advancing teams will also be allowed to compete for a national championship in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22.
Select members of the Boston College cross country teams not competing in the NCAA meet will vie for the E.C.A.C. Championship on Nov. 20, in New York, N.Y.
