Boston College senior LT Anthony Castonzo has been named a 2010 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete and finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
Each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, with the winner of this trophy having theirs expanded to $25,000.
Castonzo, a native of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, is a biochemistry major in the School of Arts and Sciences at Boston College. He holds a 3.60 GPA, while also being both active in the community and captain of the football team. Once his playing career is over, he hopes to conduct his own cancer research.
Sixteen finalists have been named for the Campbell Trophy and they are among the best and brightest in college football. They have been selected from across the country, and are recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom, on the field and in the community. This year's class has a 3.65 average GPA and includes 15 Academic All-Conference Athletes, 5 All-Americans, 1 member of a National Championship team, and 5 members working on Postgraduate Studies.
Castonzo has started all 42 games since he stepped on campus as a true freshman helping lead the Eagles to a 29-13 mark with 2 ACC Championship Game appearances in his tenure. He was named second-team All-ACC in 2008, first-team All-ACC in 2009, as well as an All-American prior to the start of this season. In all three years, he has also been a member of the All-ACC Academic team.
Former recipients of this award include Derrick Brooks, Steve Young, Danny Wuerffel, and Doug Flutie.
On December 7, Castonzo will be honored at the NFF's annual Awards Dinner in New York City's renowned Waldorf-Astoria, alongside the 2010 College Football Hall of Fame Class and other various award winners.
