Hanover, N.H. - The Boston College women's tennis team concluded play at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Dartmouth College. Thirty-eight teams consisting of 120 singles players and 69 doubles teams competed in Hanover, N.H. from Oct. 22-26. Junior Erina Kikuchi led the Eagles with six wins, going 4-1 in singles play and 2-1 in the doubles completion.
"We had an outstanding tournament," head coach Nigel Bentley commented. "We feel our team depth is very strong and this clearly was evident throughout the tournament. Erina, Alex, Veronica and Katharine all in the Round of 16 was remarkable. It is extremely difficult to win this tournament. You must win seven rounds in 4 days and so many factors come into play. We had several players knocking on the door and were really close to capturing the title. I am very proud of our effort. We recognize there is a lot of hard work ahead, but are excited about this past weekend."
BC earned and sent the maximum allotment for singles players (6) and doubles teams (3) for the tournament.
In the singles main draw, four Eagles advanced to the Round of 16, more than any other school.
Kikuchi led the way, beating Ariel Caldwell, 6-1, 0-6, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 16, where she eliminated Christine Ordway, 6-2, 6-3, to make the quarterfinal. The BC transfer would defeat Julia Comas, 6-1, 6-2, to progress one more round, however fell to Anna Edelman in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Freshman Veronica Corning also had an impressive showing. The Beverly, Mass native strung together three straight, two-set victories, including an upset over the top-ranked player in the Northeast Region Hilary Bartlett, 7-6(6), 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Senior captain Katharine Attwell and sophomore Alex Kelleher also recorded two victories to reach the Round of 16.
Boston College also sent four players to the Round of 16 in the doubles competition.
The No. 9 pairing of sophomore Olga Khmylev and Corning eliminated Aviles/Bernardez, 8-4, and Athanasiadis/Mical, 8-3, before falling to No. 6 Bykovskaya/Edelman, 8-4.
Kelleher and Kikuchi also won a pair of matches. The sophomore/junior combination took out Dreyfuss/Yapp-Shing, 8-2, and Boney/Comas, 8-3, prior to losing to Matsuoka/Scott in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (2).
Attwell and freshman Haley Dixon went 1-1 for the weekend. The duo defeated Caldwell/Stewart, 9-7, but were upended by Laszloffy/Nunic, 8-4, in the Round of 32.
Boston College will resume play at the Harvard Invitational from Nov. 5-7 in Cambridge, Mass.
