Newton, MA -
The No. 16 Boston College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Boston University Wednesday night at Newton Soccer Field in front of 651 fans. The Eagles improved to 2-0-0 overall and will travel on Friday, Sept. 4 to play at Brown University. BU dropped to 2-1-0 and will play at Loyola next.
"Anytime you get a shut out win over a city rival you take it...but ultimately we didn't show the type of quality we have shown in the past,'' said Boston College Head Coach Alison Kulik. "In the morning, we will get refocused and look to Brown on Friday.''
Boston College was led offensively by freshman Victoria DiMartino, who notched her second goal of the season and junior defender Chelsea Regan, who also scored her second goal. The Eagles defense held Boston University to just seven shots, all coming in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni earned her 12th career shutout as she had fives saves in the win.
DiMartino scored in the 24th minute when she chased a through ball from Kristen Mewis right outside the Terriers 18-yard box. Janie Reilly, the BU goalkeeper, came out to clear the ball but DiMartino deflected it to the right of the goal. She then ran down the loose ball and drilled it into the open goal from about 10 yards out for a 1-0 BC lead.
The Eagles came close on a two goal lead in the 30th minute when a cross from Mewis landed in the box and was cleared by a Terrier defender. BU had a chance minutes later when a dangerous cross came into the box. Matroianni came out aggressively and handled the tough ball with ease.
Early in the second half, Boston University pressured the Eagles but the defense held tight. All of BU's seven shots came in the half. BC put the game away in the second half off a corner kick. Junior Hannah Cerrone took the corner to the left of new BU goalkeeper Annie Tooley. Regan headed the ball by a diving Tooley to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes to play. The goal was a carbon copy of Regan's first goal of the year she scored in the 5-0 victory over Fairfield on August 28.
BU's best chance came off a corner kick when Casey Brown headed a loose ball which grazed the post and deflected out of bounds. BC's Julia Bouchelle had a chance with less than 10 minutes to play when she chipped a ball high towards the goal. Tooley punched the shot up and over the crossbar to keep the Terriers within two goals.
Boston College out shot Boston University, 13-7 and had nine corner kick attempts to three for the Terriers.
