CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A total of 22 current Boston College baseball student-athletes are around the country playing for their respective summer clubs. Here is an update on how all of them are faring so far.
Four Eagles are currently playing in and succeeding in the Cape Cod Baseball League. John Leonard and Mickey Wiswall are both suiting up for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Leonard has been dominant in four appearances - including one start - on the mound. He has a 1-0 record and a 0.73 ERA. He has allowed just one earned run in 12.1 innings, striking out 14 batters and walking four.
Wiswall has played in 14 games for Y-D at first base. He is batting .327, which is second on the team, and has two doubles and seven RBI.
Kevin Moran currently sports a 2.84 ERA for the Hyannis Mets. He has appeared in four games out of the bullpen and has a save. He has allowed seven hits and two runs in 6.1 innings while striking out seven batters and walking just one.
Mike Dennhardt has been equally impressive for the Chatham Anglers this summer with a 1.53 ERA and a 1-0 record in three starts. He has worked 17.2 innings and allowed 12 hits and just four runs - three earned. Dennhardt needed just 81 pitches to throw eight-plus innings of one-hit ball in Chatham's 2-0 win against the Bourne Braves on June 19.
The Valley Baseball League is where six Eagles are spending their summers, which is the most of any other league. Robbie Anston and Anthony Melchionda are playing for the Rockbridge Rapids in Lexington, Va. Melchionda has been solid all summer, hitting .300 with three doubles and 10 RBI in 16 starts. Anston has started 13 games and leads the team with 11 runs. He has is hitting .268 with three doubles and six RBI.
Three Eagles are currently playing for the Winchester Royals in the Valley. Matt Brazis has appeared in six games and has an ERA of 1.23 to go along with a 2-0 record. He has worked 14.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs. He has fanned 20 batters while walking nine. Nate Bayuk has appeared in 12 games in relief and has a 2-1 record with a 6.08 ERA. He has allowed six earned runs in 13.1 innings and struck out 20.
Brad Zapenas is also suiting up for the Royals out of Winchester, Va. and is batting .300 in 13 starts. He has knocked a pair of doubles and has scored 10 times while recording an on-base percentage of .429.
Andrew Lawrence is the sixth Eagle playing in the Valley for the Haymarket Senators in Virginia. He has earned 17 starts and is hitting .206 with a double, two homers, 11 RBI and five stolen bases.
Four players are spending their time in the Coastal Plains League. Pat Dean and Taylor Lasko are hurling for the Thomasville Hi Toms in North Carolina, the three-time defending CPL champions. Dean has a 2-0 record and a 1.69 ERA in three starts. He has allowed four earned runs in 21.1 innings of work, fanning 21 while walking a mere three batters. He also has a complete game to his credit.
Lasko is currently 1-2 with a 9.24 ERA in four games and three starts.
Dave Laufer and Matt Hamlet are both with the Gastonia Grizzlies in the western portion of North Carolina. Laufer has appeared in seven games from the bullpen and has a 1-2 record. Hamlet has been hitting the cover off the ball, leading the team with a .386 batting average. He also has a double, 13 RBI and a .464 on-base percentage.
