BC senior linebacker Mark Herzlich has been named to the 2009 Lott Trophy Watch List, which was announced today by Ronnie Lott. Herzlich, a quarterfinalist last year, is among 42 defensive players from around the country that have been nominated for this award.
The Lott Trophy has been awarded the past five years to players with the biggest IMPACT on their teams on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. With input from select national media and previous finalists, the winner is selected by the Board of Directors of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation.
Herzlich earned ACC Defensive Player of the year, and was an All-ACC Academic selection this past season. In addition, he was named to the Associated Press All-America Third Team. Herzlich led the team with 110 tackles. He also paced the defense with six interceptions and eight pass break-ups, while returning two interceptions for touchdowns.
The 2009 Lott Trophy will be announced at a gala black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, California on Dec. 13, 2009.
The Lott Trophy is named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, who was known for his devastating hits with the USC Trojans and San Francisco 49ers. Senior linebacker James Laurinaitis of Ohio State was awarded the 2008 Lott Trophy.
