Baseball Loses To UMass In Beanpot, 5-2

BROCKTON, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team was held to five hits on Tuesday night as Massachusetts beat the Eagles, 5-2, in the semifinals of the Beanpot at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.
The only two runs that BC scored came on back-to-back home runs to leadoff the bottom of the second inning by sophomore Mickey Wiswall and junior Mike Belfiore. It was Wiswall's fourth homer of the year and Belfiore's seventh.
Sophomore Pat Dean was saddled with the loss after working 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked two.
Dean struck out the side in the top of the second and the offense rewarded him with two runs when Wiswall and Belfiore hit consecutive solo home runs. Wiswall took a 2-1 pitch over the fence in right and then Belfiore pulled a 2-0 offering off of the scoreboard in left.
UMass got those two runs back in the top of the fourth to tie the game. With one out, Brian Baudinet hit his second triple of the game to left field and then on a 1-2 count, Jim MacDonald matched Belfiore and hit a homer off the scoreboard to deadlock the game, 2-2.
The Minutemen tacked on the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Adam Tempesta drove the first pitch he saw to the gap in deep left for a leadoff double and then on a full count, Baudinet drove a single up the middle to put the Minutemen up for the first time, 3-2.
UMass added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth when Tempesta hit a two-RBI single with two outs.
Baudinet went 3-for-4 at the plate for Massachusetts (8-16) with a pair of triples, an RBI and a run. Tempesta had two hits and two RBI while Mike Donato also had a pair of hits. Charlie Benson picked up the win on the mound after working 5.1 innings and allowing just two hits.
Boston College (19-11) will face Harvard, which lost to Northeastern in the first semifinal, in the consolation game of the Beanpot next Monday, April 13 at Fenway Park. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m.
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday afternoon when they host Rhode Island at 3 p.m. at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
