Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College women's lacrosse team travels to Virginia this week for the 2009 ACC Lacrosse Championships hosted by Virginia Tech.
The Eagles (9-7, 0-5 ACC) enter as the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 3 seeded Duke University in the first round of the tournament on Thursday April 23 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ACC select.
BC will be looking for redemption against the Blue Devils after a loss earlier this season. The Eagles and the Blue Devils last met on April 11 in an Easter weekend showdown in Boston. Despite opening the game with a three goal run and only being down by one goal at halftime, Duke pulled away for a 14-9 victory.
The Eagles offense is led by junior Lauren Costello and sophomore Kristin Igoe with 49 and 47 points on the season respectively. Costello is averaging 3.06 points per game and leads the team in assists with 17. Igoe leads the Eagles in goals scored with 37 tallies on the season and is averaging 2.94 goals per game.
Senior Katie Monaghan continues to anchor the BC defense in net with strong performances. In her last outing against Bryant University, Monaghan made six saves and held the Bulldogs scoreless in 45 minutes of play. Through 16 games, Monaghan has compiled a 9.76 GAA and a .502 save percentage.
Four of the six teams in the ACC are currently ranked in the top 10 in the country, with Duke holding the No. 5 spot.
"The ACC is one of the toughest conferences in the country, and we are honored to be participating in the conference tournament this week," said Head Coach Bowen Holden. "There is no question our team is ready, and it will be an exciting few days."
The winner of the BC/Duke game will move on to the semifinals on Friday to face North Carolina which received a bye in the quarterfinals.
Following the ACC tournament, the Eagles return to Chestnut Hill to honor their senior class with a special pre-game presentation at their last home game of the season against Harvard on April 30 at 4:30 p.m.
