CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Mickey Wiswall and redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence combined for five home runs and 13 RBI to lead the Boston College baseball team past Bryant, 16-8, on Tuesday at a rain-drenched Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Wiswall went 4-for-5 for the Eagles (25-15) with three homers, including a grand slam, a double and seven RBI. He also scored four times. His RBI and run totals are both career highs. Lawrence finished the day 4-for-5 as well with two home runs, six RBI and three runs. Each of those numbers are career highs and his two long balls were the first of his career. Lawrence entered the game with five RBI on the year.
Junior Robbie Anston was the other Eagle with four hits on the day, going 4-for-5 with three runs. Classmate Tony Sanchez went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs. Boston College's first four batters in the lineup (Anston, Lawrence, Sanchez, Wiswall) accounted for 14 of the team's 17 hits and 13 of its runs.
Freshman Mike Dennhardt picked up the win on the mound after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Only one of those runs was earned. He struck out six Bulldogs and walked two.
The Eagles got on the board right away courtesy of Wiswall's grand slam in the bottom of the first. Anston and Lawrence both singled to start the frame to put runners on the corners. Sanchez walked on four pitches to load the bases and then Wiswall blasted a grand slam over the wall in right-center to put BC up 4-0.
Bryant got two of those runs back in the top of the second, all with two outs. Jordan English walked and then Tim Norton singled through the right side. The two got into scoring position via passed ball and then Jamie Skagerlind popped one up, but the ball dropped and the two runs scored.
BC posted five more runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 9-2 lead. Freshman Brad Zapenas led off and got on when the third baseman mishandled a grounder and then Anston doubled down the line in left to put two Eagles in scoring position. Lawrence then took a pitch over the scoreboard in right for a three-run shot that put Boston College ahead, 7-2.
Sanchez walked to keep the inning going and then Wiswall belted a double to the gap in right. Juniors Mike Belfiore and Barry Butera got the two runners home with a pair of sacrifice flies.
Wiswall added his second home run of the game, a solo shot to dead center, in the bottom of the fourth to put BC up eight runs, 10-2.
Bryant got that run back in the top of the fifth when Norton reached second on an error to leadoff. A groundout to the right side moved him to third and then Pat McKenna drove him home with a sac fly to left.
The Eagles scored four more times in the bottom of the frame. Junior John Spatola led off and pulled a 2-2 offering for a single to right and then sophomore Mike Sudol roped a double over the first baseman to put him and Spatola in scoring position. Spatola scored in a wild pitch and then Anston walked on four pitches to put runners on the corners with one out.
Lawrence then drove the first pitch he saw over the scoreboard again for three more runs to extend the lead to 14-3.
The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth inning. Pat O'Connor doubled to dead center with one out and then Jeff Vigurs reached on an error to put runners on the corners with one out. English then singled in front of the left fielder to plate O'Connor for Bryant's fourth run.
Bryant got four more runs in the seventh to pull within six runs but that is as close as it would get. Wiswall put the game out of reach with his two-run homer in the eighth to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
English went 2-for-4 for Bryant (26-15) with a double and three RBI. O'Connor had two hits and two runs while Nick Campbell also had two hits and drove in a run.
Boston College is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Cambridge to take on Harvard. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
