The Boston College softball team (15-26, 1-10 ACC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Maryland by matching 4-3 scores.
Both Allison Gage (6-10) and Taylor Peyton (8-11) pitched complete games for the Eagles, and Brittany Wilkins added two walks to bring her season total to 30, matching the all-time school record held by Renee Ramos.
Maryland-4, BC-3 (9 innings) - The Eagles grabbed an early lead in the contest in the top of the second inning. Blair Destito led off the frame with a single to center field, and stole second base, her fifth steal of the season. Alison Kooistra laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Destito to third base, and two batters later, Carolyn Jones' infield single gave BC a 1-0 lead.
The Terrapins took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run home run by Breanna Shaw.
BC regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Dani Weir led off the inning with a walk, but remained on first base as the next two hitters were retired. Alison Kooistra then hit a double down the left field line, driving home Weir and tying the game at 2-2. Gemma Ypparila came in as a pinch hitter and added another double, scoring Kooistra for a 3-2 lead.
Gage retired the Terrapins in order in the bottom of the sixth inning, and came in with a chance to close out the win in the bottom of the seventh. Maryland started the frame with three consecutive singles, loading the bases with no one out. Gage induced a fielder's choice force out from third base to home for the first out of the inning, but then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing a runner to score from third base to tie the game at 3-3.
The sophomore retired the next two Maryland batters on foul out and a ground out to send the game into extra innings.
BC's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth inning, when Blair Destito hit a one out double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. But Maryland pitcher Kerry Hickey retired the next two hitters to keep the game tied.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with runners on first and second base and one out, Maryland's Niki Lau doubled home the winning run to give the Terrapins a 4-3 win.
Maryland-4, BC-3 - In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Maryland took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. A two-out triple off of BC starter Taylor Peyton, followed by BC error on a play at first base gave the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles rallied to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Alison Kooistra started the rally with a single to left field to lead off the inning, Gemma Ypparila and Taylor Peyton reached on consecutive errors by the Maryland infield on bunts put into play, loading the bases with no one out.
The next batter, Carolyn Jones, was hit by a pitch, tying the score, 1-1. After a fielder's choice and a line out kept the score tied with two outs, Dani Weir doubled down the right field line, plating two runs for a 3-1 BC lead.
Maryland responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs on three hits and one error to take a 4-3 lead that would stand for the remainder of the contest.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Eagles put runners on first and second with no one out when Katrina Vasquez walked and Brittany Wilkins followed with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt by Irene Delagrammaticas advanced the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position, but the next two BC hitters were retired on a strike out and a groundout to end the game.
The Eagles will conclude their series with Maryland tomorrow afternoon with a game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
