Today we sat down with senior defensive end Austin Giles to give us his thoughts on spring practice.
How’s spring practice going for you so far?
It’s flying by, actually. This being my last one, I kind of wish there was a little bit more left to it. As of right now we have five practices left, and I’m just trying to make the most out of every single one, learning as much as I can.
Has it felt good to be out on the football field again?
It is a lot better than going through a whole winter of running and lifting every day, and actually getting out there and practicing what we have been working on. We’re just trying to get better.
Can you compare this year’s defensive line to last year’s?
Well, obviously we are missing two big plugs in the middle, but Damik Scafe has done a tremendous job stepping up and making big plays, while being a vocal leader. Brendan Deska has been in there throwing his body around. Everyone has been putting their head in there, and everyone is doing a great job. I think we are going to be turning a lot of heads this fall.
Are there any areas you can improve or anything you’ve been working on this off-season?
I’ve always wanted to get my first step quicker because I feel like I read and react, instead of just going. I’ve always tried to improve my first step and getting quicker.
What differences have you noticed with Frank Spaziani as the head coach?
There are many similarities to Coach Tom O’Brien, because I was here when O’Brien was here. The practice schedules seem very similar. The style seems very similar. Obviously he has been here the whole time I’ve been here. I love having Coach Spaz as the head coach. He’s a great guy. He’s funny, always trying to make everyone laugh and have a good time. I love having him.
What kind of expectations do you have for next year?
Like I said, with the defensive line, I think we are going to surprise some people because they know what we graduated. We graduated maybe two first-round picks. There will be a couple of guys on offense we are losing. We are going to be turning a lot of heads. Our offense, once we get going is really going to gel. We will surprise people, especially in the ACC.
