Women's Track & Field Takes Bronze at UMass Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The women's track and field team finished in third place on Saturday at the UMass Invitational held in Amherst. Freshman Kelsey Huckins turned in two of the best performances in the hammer and discus throws that the program has ever seen.
Maine won the event with a total of 178.50 points and UMass finished in second with 140.50. The Eagles totaled 131 points on the day while Williams College and Hartford finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Huckins won the hammer throw with a toss of 50.03m which was the second-best mark in program history. She previously broke the record at the Stanford Invitational earlier in the season. She also took second in the discus with a throw of 42.95m which is also the second-best toss in school history.
Senior Christie Matkut finished third in hammer with a mark of 45.40m and freshman Hilary Cloonan took fifth at 39.20m.
Four of the top five finishers in the 1500m all wore maroon and gold. Junior Samantha Gawrych won the race with a time of 4:35.22 while sophomore Madeline Wallace took second behind her at 4:35.63. Juniors Jessica Driscoll (4:36.54) and Christine Sullivan (4:37.32) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Sophomore Siobhan Breagy won the 800m run by crossing the finish line in 2:14.13.
Junior Melissa Hadfield finished third in the long jump at 5.21m while classmate Caitlyn McCann leaped her way to a fourth place finish with a mark of 10.66m.
Freshman Anna Cioffredi finished in second place in the 400m dash with a time of 55.87 and junior Meaghan Callahan took fourth at 58.42. Cioffredi also took second in the 200m dash by clocking in at 25.69.
Senior Medena Knespl took second in the 5000m with a time of 17:49.46. The Boston College 4x100m relay team also raced to second place with a time of 49.01.
The women will now prepare for the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships beginning on April 16.
