The Boston College softball team (14-22, 1-6 ACC), fell to Virginia Tech, 9-5, in the Eagles' rain delayed series opener against the Hokies at Tech Softball Park.
The Hokies got off to a quick start against BC starting pitcher Morgan Kidd (1-5), scoring two runs on four hits off of the freshman before she was relieved by Allison Gage with one out in the first inning.
Gage allowed two inherited runners to score on a double, pushing Virginia Tech's lead to 4-0, before recording the final two outs of the inning.
After the conclusion of the inning, the rains came, causing a delay that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.
Shortly after play resumed, the Hokies increased their lead to 6-0 with a bases loaded, two-out single in the bottom of the third inning.
The Eagles cut the lead in half with a rally in the top of the fourth inning. Irene Delegrammaticas started off the inning with a single up the middle. Dani Weir followed her with a single to the right side to put runners at first and second. After Amy Tunstall grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third, Taylor Peyton hit her fourth home run of the year to cut the lead to 6-3.
BC got to within two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Dani Weir singled home Angela Pandolfo with two outs.
But the Hokies rallied for three runs on four hits off of Taylor Peyton in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
In the top of the 7th inning, BC added a run when Brittany Wilkins led off the frame with a double, and later scored on Amy Tunstall's infield single. But the Eagles were retired before extending the threat any further.
BC will conclude the series against Virginia Tech tomorrow, with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
