GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior catcher Tony Sanchez has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. Sanchez paced the Boston College offense that scored 26 runs in the last two games of a series win at No. 6 Florida State.
Sanchez led the Eagles to a series win at Dick Howser Stadium and in doing so, BC became the first team to ever take an ACC opening weekend series from the Seminoles.
The Miami, Fla., product went 7-for-9 in the final two games of the series. For the entire week, he batted .526 with three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs. He batted .833 (5-for-6) with runners on third and less than two outs. Sanchez's on-base percentage was .640 while his slugging percentage was 1.000.
Sanchez leads the ACC this season in hits (25) and RBI (19), is second in home runs (4) and total bases (43), fourth in runs (18), fifth in on-base percentage (.545), sixth in slugging (.782) and seventh in doubles (6) and batting average (.455).
BC (10-3, 2-1 ACC) has another tough test this weekend when it faces nationally-ranked Georgia Tech in a three-game ACC series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium with game times slated for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
