The Boston College softball team (9-15, 0-0 ACC) fell to Connecticut 3-2 in extra innings this afternoon in a steady drizzle at Shea Field.
Allison Gage (3-5) registered her fourth complete game of the season in the loss, pitching all eight innings for the Eagles, allowing three runs on seven hits, while walking two batters and striking out four.
The Eagles got off to a good start in the bottom of the second inning when designated hitter Taylor Peyton hit her second home run of the season over the center field wall to give BC a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut responded in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Both pitchers settled into a groove until the top of the sixth inning, when the Huskies put runners on 2nd and 3rd base with one out. Gage then induced two consecutive ground outs to keep the game tied at 1.
However, Gage would yield in the top of the seventh inning when Connecticut was able to convert a leadoff double into a run giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Boston College was able to manufacture a run of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 2-2. Peyton led off the inning with a walk, and was sacrificed to second by Blair Destito. After Peyton moved to third on a groundout, a wild pitch by Rachael Crossin allowed the runner to score, sending the game into extra innings.
The Huskies quickly scored with two singles in the top of the 8th innings, and the Eagles were retired in order by Jessie Stavola to end the game.
BC will open up ACC play at North Carolina on Saturday when they take on the Tar Heels at 1:00 pm
