Shreveport, La. - On the second day of the Centenary Tournament, the Boston College softball team (1-3, 0-0 ACC) defeated Nicholls State 3-1 for its first win of the season before falling later on to SIU-Edwardsville, 3-2.
Junior pitcher Taylor Peyton pitched 8.1 innings on the day, allowing two earned runs and striking out six batters. Brittany Wilkins led the offensive effort for BC on the day, going a combined 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
BC-3, Nicholls State-1 - The Eagles picked up three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Brittany Wilkins led off the game with a double, which was followed by a single by Irene Delagrammaticas. Gemma Ypparila scored one run with an RBI single, and Dani Weir followed with a single to drive home another run. Katrina Vasquez, pinch-running for Ypparila, then scored on a double steal, with Weir taking second base and Vasquez scoring from third to give BC a 3-0 lead.
The margin was enough for Peyton (1-1), who pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out five for her first win of the season.
SIU-Edwardsville-3, BC-2 - In the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles struck first with two runs to take the lead. Brittany Wilkins walked, and Irene Delagrammaticas followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Amy Tunstall moved both runners into scoring position, a fielder's choice by Gemma Ypparila scored the first run of the game. The Eagles scored another run on an error by SIU-Edwardsville to take a 2-0 lead.
BC pitcher Allison Gage, who held the Cougers scoreless for five innings, allowed runs in the sixth and seventh innings before leaving with the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh and a runner on second base. Taylor Peyton got the Eagles out of the inning, inducing a pop-up to send the game into extra innings.
The BC offense, which managed one hit off of SIU-Edwardsville starter Erika Taylor, could not score in the top half of the eighth inning, and the Cougers won the game in the bottom half with an RBI double.
The Eagles will conclude the Centenary Tournament with a game against Bryant tomorrow.
