Senior Mickel Picco scored 20 of her 25 points in the second half to lead Boston College past Southern Methodist University, 69-68, in the final of the Hoops For The Cure Tournament at the Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU. The Eagles improved to 3-3 on the season and handed the Mustangs their first loss of the season (5-1).
Picco, who hit 5-of-6 three-pointers in the second half, earned a spot on the all-tournament team, while teammate Carolyn Swords, who notched 20 points and 13 rebounds, was named the tournament MVP. BC senior Ayla Brown had eight points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Stefanie Murphy added six points and eight rebounds.
SMU was led by senior Brittany Gilliam with 22 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while Christine Elliott added 17 points.
The Eagles held a slight lead at the half, 29-23, behind 12 points from Carolyn Swords. BC shot just 1-for-8 from the three-point line but held a 30-15 lead on the boards.
Gilliam sparked the Mustangs in a second half when she scored seven points of nine points to tie the game at 35-35. The lead would change 10 times in the final 14 minutes. Elliott gave SMU a 42-41 lead at 12:33. The Mustangs held the lead until Picco tied the game at 48-48 on a three-pointer from the corner with eight minutes to play.
Swords scored four consecutive points to give the Eagles the lead, 52-50 with just under eight minutes to play. The two teams continued to exchange baskets down the stretch until the four minute mark. Picco hit a long three-pointer, followed by a layup by Murphy and BC was up, 63-57.
SMU cut the lead to three points on a long three-pointer from Jillian Samuels at 2:43 to play. Picco would counter with her sixth three-pointer of the game. The Eagles sealed the win when Picco was fouled. She hit the first shot to give BC a two point lead, 67-65. On her second shot, Brown snared the rebound and was fouled. She proceeded to hit two free throws for a 69-65 lead.
The Eagles shot 42 percent from the field while SMU shot 40 percent. BC grabbed 49 rebounds to 33 for SMU. Boston College scored 34 points in the paint and had 19 second chance points while SMU had 26 points inside.
GAME NOTES:
Junior Stefanie Murphy grabbed eight rebounds tonight which gave the New Hampshire native membership into the 500-point-500-rebound club. She joins teammates Ayla Brown and Carolyn Swords on the list ... Mickel Picco has now hit six three-pointers in two games this season and four times in her career ... She is just 25 away from tying the program record for most career three's made (212) ... Carolyn Swords earned her 21st career double-double and third of the season ... Junior point guard Jaclyn Thoman played a season-high 36 minutes and notched six points, seven assists and three rebounds.
