CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The 2009 Boston College field hockey team was not ready for their season to be over, and apparently the NCAA Division 1 Field Hockey Committee felt the same way. The Eagles were informed late last night when the 16 team field was announced that they will be playing in this year's 2009 NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
Five conferences were awarded automatic qualification. In addition, six conferences competed for three play-in berths and the remaining eight teams were selected at large.
This year's field of 16 includes the top four seeds of No. 1 Maryland (20-0), No. 2 Virginia (18-3), No. 3 North Carolina (16-2) and No. 4 Princeton (14-2).
Boston College last participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2005, and the Eagles last victory in the big dance was in 1998. BC will be making its seventh tournament appearance in school history, and it is 2-6 all-time.
The Eagles (13-6) will be one of four teams in the Princeton, New Jersey region which will be held at the campus of Princeton University. Boston College's first round opponent will be former Big East rival Syracuse (17-3). BC defeated Syracuse 1-0 this season in a hard-fought game back on October 25.
A key matchup in this game will be between Boston College senior forward Chelsey Feole and Syracuse junior forward Lindsey Conrad. Feole and Conrad are both First Team All-Conference members this season, and they both lead their respective teams in goals and points scored. Both teams will be looking for them to lead, and the difference in the game could be which star player strikes first.
Boston College and Syracuse will play their first round matchup on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m.
The first- and second-round games will be played on four campus sites on November 14 and 15. Wake Forest University will host the semifinals and final, November 20 and 22 at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. For ticket information, please call 888/758-3322.
