NEWTON, Mass.- Freshman Kevin Mejia converted a first-half penalty kick and classmate Charlie Rugg redirected a direct kick late in the match to lift Boston College to a 2-0 ACC victory over Clemson before 358 fans at the Newton Campus Complex.
Mejia gave BC the early lead with a successful penalty kick at 19:32. Senior Mor Avi Hanan's direct kick from 25 yards out was saved by Clemson keeper Joseph Bendik, but a scramble for the rebound resulted in the Tiger foul in the box.
The score remained the same until a late Clemson foul just outside the box gave the Eagles the opportunity for a set play. Freshman Kyle Bekker's kick from 20 yards right along the end line found Rugg in front. Rugg's right foot redirected the ball from six yards out into the back of the net.
BC (6-6-0, 2-2-0 ACC) outshot Clemson 23-7 in the match, including an 11-1 advantage in the first half. BC enjoyed several quality chances before the intermission. Junior Karl Reddick 16-foot blast was saved in the 15th minute. Sophomore Edvin Worley beat the Clemson keeper to a Reddick pass in the box at 31:45, but a Clemson defender made the save. Worley corralled the rebound on the left side, but his second shot was wide to the short side.
Worley, who checked into the match in the 26th minute, had another chance with 10:53 left in the half, but his redirected shot of an Ernie McAlister cross sailed over the goal.
BC had 12 second-half shots, while Clemson (2-7-1, 1-3-0 ACC) recorded six of its seven shots in the final 45 minutes. Clemson senior Greg Eckhardt's header sailed wide in the 59th minute.
