NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Colin Murphy scored the game's lone goal in the 43rd minute to lift Boston College to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Quinnipiac before 438 fans on Columbus Day at the Newton Campus Complex.
Murphy collected sophomore Edvin Worley's feed and hit a half volley from 22 yards with his right foot beyond the reach of a diving Quinnipiac goalkeeper Frederick Hall for the game's only goal at 42:52. Freshman Charlie Rugg also assisted on the score.
The host Eagles (7-6-0) outshot the visiting Bobcats 15-5 in the match, including a 10-1 edge in second-half action.
Senior Mor Avi Hanan enjoyed the day's first prime opportunity. In the 12th minute, the Kiriat Ono, Israel, resident, hit a curling left-footed direct kick from 22 yards that ricocheted off a Quinnipiac defender and was saved by an outstretched Hall.
In the 29th minute, freshman midfielder Kyle Bekker was on the receiving end of consecutive one-touch passes from Jeremiah Gallington and Worley, but his left-footed shot was also saved by Hall.
After setting up Bekker in the 29th minute, Gallington enjoyed a prime scoring chance for himself just three minutes later. The Mattapan, Mass., resident sent a curling shot from 17 yards with the outside of his right foot to the upper corner. The shot was also stopped by Hall, who entered Monday's match having not allowed a goal in the last 290 minutes. He totaled four saves in the losing effort.
Quinnipiac (5-1-5) enjoyed perhaps its best scoring chances in the first half. Senior Pierre Soubrier redirected Durval Pereira's corner kick with a header just wide left of the BC net in the 18th minute. Later that half, Nick Pelicaen one-timed Pereira's feed from six yards just wide to the right in the 36th minute.
Pelicaen tallied three of Quinnipiac's five shots in the match.
BC opened the second half strong, tallying seven shots in the first 10 minutes. Avi Hanan (game-high seven shots) nearly doubled the BC lead in the 46th minute, then almost again in 51st minute. Both left-footed strikes knuckled just past the Quinnipiac goal.
Murphy nearly added his second goal of the match in the 54th minute, hitting a right-footed shot along the ground to the near post that was saved by Hall.
BC freshman goalkeeper Justin Luthy did not register a save in the victory. He improves to 7-6 while tallying his fifth shutout on the season.
