CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Chris Crane was 8-for-12 passing for 110 yards and orchestrated a touchdown drive during a two minute drill in Boston College's first scrimmage of the preseason on August 9 at Alumni Stadium. Junior Rich Gunnell led all receivers with 58 yards.
Crane's 24-yard touchdown pass was completed to junior Justin Jarvis on a fade in the left side of the end zone. His longest completion of the evening was 41 yards to Gunnell.
"It was a typical first scrimmage" Coach Jeff Jagodzinski said. "There were some good things and some that really need improvement. I think our run defense is very stout, and I was very happy with that. We just have to keep getting better, and we will."
Redshirt freshman Dominique Davis was 9-for-16 behind center for 83 yards. Jarvis and sophomore Billy Flutie both had 43 yards receiving on three and four catches, respectively. The offense's leading rusher was freshman Jerry Kelly who ran for 22 yards on six carries.
Junior Razzie Smith had the longest rush of the day when he scampered for 19 yards.
The running game could not break through the stingy defense as the offense managed 46 yards rushing. Senior Brian Toal led all tacklers with five stops while junior Roderick Rollins and sophomore DeLeon Gause both had four.
Sophomore Wes Davis came up with the only interception of the day when he picked off a pass in the end zone. Senior Jerry Willette, sophomore Brad Newman, and freshman Max Holloway each recorded a sack.
Both senior Steve Aponavicius and sophomore Billy Bennett connected on their only field goal chances of the evening. Aponavicius hit from 37 yards while Bennett connected on a 35 yard attempt.
